This is not the first time PIA have been offered Boeing planes at concessional rates
in 1998 three brand new747-400 ordered by Philippine Airlines were on offer to PK but due to some sinister plan of the then Nawaz govt. they opportunity was lost.
in 1999 just after leasing the 747-300 from Cathay Pacific PIA were in talks to lease four 777 from them too
, but the deal fell through due to PK's unsatisfactory financial position. So its not that PIA dont need the 777 and are just taking them because there getting them cheap. They wanted those planes all along

- I agree with you, PIA should consider the used 747-400 and 777's plus the A330 and A340 available in the market these days as well as the A310. Unless the offer from Boeing is too good to resist.
BA319-131..... This is not PIA's new livery! it was when they leased the 743's also had a beautiful floral design on the tail, but got rejected and earlier this year PK reverted to their Green belly livery as shown below
, now only these five 743 are wearing this lousy scheme plus one A300,737 and F27, the 742 and the A310 which were wearing this style have been repainted in PIA's full colours like below and I have requested the MD of PK to have these remaining aircraft also coloured in the airlines full livery, hope he does so.
PIA also need the 747-200M so I doubt those will be replaced by the 777s, as GF-A330
suggested the 742's should be converted to cargo configuration.
Breifly put PIA need the 777 they have always wanted them and preferred them over the Airbus A330 and A340, they're lucky that this offer has come up, perhaps they should consider dividing it between three 747-400 and four 777
