IAH Vs. HOU...

Thu Oct 25, 2001 1:44 pm

A current topic is Frontier at IAH. I wondered why Frontier chose IAH vs. HOU? WN doesn't fly to DEN and no carrier flies HOU-DEN, yet UA and CO both fly IAH-DEN. Seems to me HOU would've been a better choice. I've always been partial to "secondary" airports, i.e. MDW, OAK, LGB, HOU etc... Any thoughts?

Good question!

We often discuss HOU on the IAH spotters club board http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/iahspottersclub .

Several members would like to see the airport shut down as they feel it takes away from IAH. I, on the other hand am very much a supporter of HOU as it provides a valuable service for those living and doing business in the downtown and near town areas of Houston.

I live in the Galleria area which is closer to HOU, yet I work out of IAH. Many of my friends choose SWA out of HOU when they fly for business and always tell me "We'd rather take Continental but HOU is so easy". That is one reason why Continental started the shuttle flight from HOU to IAH. That has ceased as well as HOU to EWR. I see that service starting back up next year though. As Hobby renovates the terminal area you will see increased service by other airlines into the airport. I see CO and others operating several new flights with RJ's to business destinations out of HOU. I don't think you'll ever see a big political debate over IAH and HOU like we say up in the Dallas area with Love. The state of Texas has learned it's lesson with regards to those type of deals.
Question to the IAH spotters? Where do you guys prefer to spot these days, and have you heard when they will reoppent he B roof top parking. I love to park there when I need to go to the B crew lounge for short periods of time etc., and to watch planes. Starting spotting there when I was 8 years old driving with my parents from Beaumont. I still watch planes from there even though I fly them 80 hours a month.

Good question. Currently, WN pretty much dominates HOU, it would be good to see some agregation there.

IAHERJ,

I am not certain when (or even if) B or A's rooftops will re-open. The A/B facility as you know has been open for some time and according to a fellow IAH spotter who now volunteers to guide tours of IAH on the behalf of HAS, says that C and the A/B rooftops are now open and that spotting and photography are ok for the time being, but you may however be approached by security.

Before 9/11, I would often go up to the roof of B terminal and photograph, although it was shut down for parking, actually it was rather nice not having to dodged cars. It would not suprise me if it were closed off altogether now in light of 9/11.

Say, I have not seen a post from you on the IAH Spotters Club for some time, though I have been rather quiet from that site as well.

Secondary is the best. Southwest doesn't have flights out of IAH and what about Continental flying from IAH-HOU(Hobby). You don't see American or UAL flying from ORD-MDW. Isn't that kinda wierd though?

Sorry CcrlR,

Southwest does indeed have flights from IAH. Last time I checked there were some 7 flights (although I could be wrong on that number) to DAL, although I believe that 2 of these were cut back due to recent events.

There is not going to be any agregation or competition between Frontier and Southwest even if Frontier was to fly into HOU instead of IAH. Southwest doesn't fly to DEN. They used to a long time ago at Stapleton, but not DIA so there wouldn't be any competion/agregation to begin with. Both airlines have to fly to the same city for that to happen!

As someone mentioned before, HOU will never close. It can't close becuase us people who live down south have at least an hours drive to IAH. I don't like driving except for big trips. I like doing to 20 min drive to HOU for my frequent trips to DAL. However I kinda wish Southwest flew into DFW, like IAH. My families house is right next to DFW. DAL is a long way off. So I can't win either way, in Dallas or Houston. I'm looking foward to seeing the new terminal at HOU.

Saxmann66,
Have you ever tried EFD? I used to work that flight a lot when I flew the EMB-120. It seems that many business types who live in the South area flock to this flight for the easy and free parking along with the easy check-in with no lines. Ten minutes in the air and you are at IAH and don't need to pass security or check in again.

Thomasphoto60:
I don't know if you were speaking to me when you asked why I haven't posted on the spotter's board. I didn't know it existed. I'd like to visit it sometime though. Thanks for the info on terminals A&B. I totally forgot that you can just take the elevator up as most of my spotting has been associated with my parking on the roof. I think I'll get to the airport a bit early next trip and enjoy this nice weather from my favorite spot.

I really think that Hobby will continue to play a key role in air transportation in the city of Houston. Houstonions love convenience (valet parking at the grocery store) and Hobby is just that. IAH is growing and will be the International Airport of choice to Latin America in the next few years. You should see the plans for the new Terminal. Continental will continue to expand South of the border with ERJ's to thin markets and larger jets and more frequencies to the big markets. Hobby will become more than a reliever and low fair airport with it's modern new terminal. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Hi IAHERJ,

I had you confused with another that uses the ERJ moniker.....ERJFLYER, he also flies for COEX here in Houston.

Here is the link to the spotters club

http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/iahspottersclub

And everyone is invited to join in regardless where you live. We have some 239 members ranging from the evil empire of Dallas  Wink/being sarcastic to France.

Can anyone give me an idea what other kind of traffic flies out of HOU?

Are there alot of flying schools and corporate jets,
King Airs and the like?

I am an air traffic controller at ACT and want to get to IAH. HOU, hopefully will be my next stop on the way to IAH as I figure going from ACT direct to IAH wont be possible. So any other info on Hobby would be nice. Thanks

There are quite a few flying schools at HOU, although I can not give an exact number. HOU is the preferred destination for many corporate jets as well as Sugarland and a few other smaller fields. Try the link below.

http://www.houstonairportsystem.org

Its a pretty slow loading and crummy site, but hopefully they may be able to provide some useful info.

Good luck.

With the new terminal at Hobby...HOU will be a very attractive airport to newcomers...perhaps Midwest Ex, ATA...but with Southwest it will be an uphill battle for any takers

Hobby has everything, save for any "heavy" traffic. Police choppers, flight schools and corporate aircraft are just as frequent as airline movements.
