AirNZ Cuts Aussie Flights

Thu Oct 25, 2001 1:46 pm

Dow Jones Newswires 25-10-01

0248GMT Australia Flights Slashed

Services from Auckland to major Australian cities are the biggest casualty of the cutbacks.

The Auckland to Sydney route loses 19 flights from a total of 116, Auckland to Melbourne has 38 flights cut from the usual 116, and Auckland to Brisbane has its 68 scheduled flights slashed to 49.

Another big cut in November is a reduction to 18 flights from 30 on the Sydney to Los Angeles route.

Flights from Auckland to destinations including Hong Kong, Nagoya, Apia and Rarotonga are being cut by a lesser extent.

In addition, seat capacity on return services between Christchurch and major Australian cities has been reduced by replacing a Boeing 767 aircraft with a Boeing 737 on some flights.

France said Air New Zealand is maintaining a close watch on forward demand to ensure scheduled services offer an appropriate amount of capacity.

Read last week Qantas has had a 15% PAX increase
on Tasman, just goes to show you what happens
when you try to shaft an Aussie icon.

NZ's loads have jumped up a lot too. AKL-SYD loads have been in the region of 90-95% in the past couple of weeks!

QF and NZ have been having a massive fare sale for the past month - the high loads can be attributed to that, plus the start of summer season.

Things are really positive at Air NZ - loads are picking up, increases to the Asian services and route expansion are in the works, and the outpouring of support has been overwhelming!

Hang on a mo'. I thought flights to Hong Kong were increasing. How accurate is this report?
