Longest Detour You Took To Fly From A To B

Thu Oct 25, 2001 3:00 pm

A friend of mine once flew AMS-YYZ.
He could have flown non-stop, but instead decided to fly AMS-JFK-DTW-YYZ on a KL/NW-combination to fly as many different types as possible.

Any other fanatics out there?

1990, on a flight Sydney-Guam, due to a refuelers
strike in Sydney, Continental Micronesia diverted
to Fiji and then Honolulu after 2 days there, back
across the Pacific to Guam.

Me and a friend have flown from Düsseldorf to San Francisco the route DUS-BRU-ATL-SFO on a SN/DL combination. We arrived in SFO after 24 hours. This trip was realy cool because we missed our connecting flight at ATL so we have to spend a couple of hours there, of cause we used the time for spotting.

I once was set to fly AMS-LHR-JFK, then onwards EWR-MSP-LAX-HNL on a RJ/NW-combination. It was the cheapest ticket which would take me on a 36 hour trip, including a stay overnight in NY and a change-over from JFK to EWR.

Instead I decided to spend some more money on a BD/NZ-trip, which was still good for 20 hours...

Unintentional...
From Houston to Omaha via Phoenix
On America West.
It was the last time I ever let my legal aid book me a flight (my secretary is a bit of an enthusiast himself so he makes more rational choices).

One horrible trip was also Houston-Dallas-San Francisco-Tokyo-Singapore (on American/United/JAL).

SV's timetable states that RUH-NRT (not served by SV) would connect with JL at LHR!!!

I sure hope that is only a mistake! Imagine going from ME to Japan via UK  Nuts

I have never been on that route! but there is soemthing good about it.. You get to spot at LHR and NRT Big grin

Bahrein to Dubai via Beirut. BAH and DXB are about 100 mi apart - so instead of a 30 minute hop I did it a pair of three hour flights. Which you all would have done as well, since those two three hour flights were both 707s (this was in 94).

That was part of a five day trip which was:
SYD-MEL-MNL-BKK Philippines (all 747s)
BKK-BOM Air France (744 combi)
BOM-AUH-BAH Gulf Air (L1011)
BAH-BEY-DXB MEA (707s)
DXB-LHR Pakistan Int'l (742).

Or Charlotte to London via Atlanta, JFK and Helsinki (yes) - CLT-ATL-JFK was Delta, JFK-HEL-LHR was Finnair. Groovy baby.

Pretty much a straight line, and all one ticket, but still interesting, London to Sydney:
LHR-AMS British Midland (735)
AMS-BKK-TPE China Air Lines (MD11)
TPE-SYD Mandarin (747SP).
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

I was flying on TWA from FRA to CVG; the first flight got delayed out of FRA and arrived @ JFK about 3 hours late. Eventually I flew, FRA - JFK - ORD - STL - CVG, quite a trip...

Originally booked YEG-CUN (Cancun) via DFW. AA pulled out of YEG after we booked the tickets. Were re-routed YEG-YYC-YYZ-MIA-CUN on the way down, and CUN-DFW-YYZ-YEG on the way home.

I have flown OSL-CPH-LIS-Funchal (instead of the direct charter flight, because the time din't suit us)
I have also flown OSL-CPH-ZHR-Malaga instead of a probably shorter flight with only one connection.

If I recall correctly it was in 1979. Planned routing on Pan Am LHR-SFO-HNL. Because of the grounding of DC-10s, Pan Am was booked solid and I couldn't even book one segment. Pan Am re-routed me LHR-FRA-DEL-BKK-HKG-NRT-HNL. Arrived in HNL some 25+ hours later.

My longest "detour" as a confirmed revenue pax was MSP-IAH-ATL and return on Continental in August, '94. The routing each way covered 1,723 miles whereas MSP-ATL non-stop is 906 miles. The detour saved my wife and I over $100 each compared to the lowest non-stop fares offered by NW and DL at the time. And our first segment, MSP-IAH, was on N69602, at the time a brand-new 737-500 and my first-ever flight on the type.

However, my longest detour was as a non-rev space available pax on Alaska in February, 2000: PHX-SNA-PHX by the routing PHX-PDX-OAK-SNA-SEA-PHX, an odyessey totalling 3,954 miles covered in one day. PHX-SNA-PHX non-stop is 338 miles each way, 676 miles total. The trip included my first flights on 737-700 aircraft (N612AS and N611AS) and my first flights in and out of SNA, with its unique noise-abatement takeoff procedure that is mindful of what a catapault launch from an aircraft carrier must be like.

I'm presently moving to Las Vegas, and a few flights go Ft Laud - Chicago - Denver - Las Vegas, some Ft Laud - Chicago - Los Angeles - Vegas. I'm just pissed I couldn't route myself via Palm Springs or Fresno  Sad

Well my roommate and I were bored one day so in about 25 hours we flew...

DTW-LGA AA ERJ-135
JFK-SFO AA 767-200
SFO-LAX AA S80
LAX-SJC AA 737-300
SJC-ORD AA 737-800
ORD-DTW AA S80

We left DTW at 6am spet about 2 hours in NYC then on to SFO and LAX where we were about 4 hours and back to ORD then to DTW and we were back about 7am the next morning! Talk about being TIRED! We love non-rev travel! We even got First on the JFK SFO and the SJC ORD! It was great!

Long only in percentage of "waste of time" (ex girlfriends words). WN has (had?) a flight from TUS-SAN with 3 stops. The routing was TUS-LAS-OAK-BUR-SAN. I don't know why she was worried. It was my time and she was already in San Diego waiting. I just couldn't explain to her why I would leave home 2 hours early to catch a plane that made "all those stops". I got into SAN about the same time of day as a nonstop, didn't pay more and had fun.

Last year, my destination was MSY from MCI. I had already booked a flight from MCI to MCO, but changed my mind and wanted to go to MSY. The prices were outrageous from MCI to go to MSY, so I stayed with my flight to MCO and purchased a ticket from MCO to MSY. It was much cheaper doing it like this. Here is how the trip went.

MCI-CLT on US F-100; seven-hour layover in CLT
CLT-MCO on US 757; stayed the night in MCO
MCO-MSY on Comair CRJ the next day

The return trip was:

MSY-ATL on DL 757; about three hours in ATL
ATL-MCO on DL M11; placed in a two and a half hour holding pattern due to a severe storm in MCO. Finally landed at MCO, about three hours late. Stayed the night at MCO again.
MCO-CLT on US M82; two hours in CLT
CLT-MCI on US M81; finally back home

Would I do it again? Probably.

LAX-ATL-LAX but since I wanted to fly on Deltas BizElite again, we went from Pittsburgh, then to JFK, then back to LAX... had BizElite from Pitsburgh to JFK.. and the ATL to Pittsburgh ended up having a last minute equipment change from a MD90 to a L1011 which turned out to be my last L10 flight.

I went on a system one training course in Houston and travelled home non rev and the only way to get home was on CO all the way except ZQ (The old Ansett New Zealand) on the last leg

Ended up doing

HNL - LAX - HNL - GUM - BNE - AKL - WLG

And the flight from HNL to GUM was a milk stopper!!!

Last winter we needed to get to Los Angeles from Richmond. We were non-reving, and could not get on any flights to Los Angeles from any point on deltas route. So we decided to go from Ric-atl-Nrt-Lax. We left, that morning all ready, but didnt make it on the flight to Atl. It was a shame, cause I was actually looking forward to doing that.

RDU-JFK-BOS-PHL-YYZ
All in one time zone and on one day. Think I was exhausted? Hell ye! But it was the cheapest way to get to YYZ with only a couple days notice. I probably could have walked faster from RDU, but I didn't think it would turn out to be as bad as it did. All segments except the first one were delayed by 2+ hours. One was cancelled and all were on different airlines. I was ready to take the bus home from JFK, but thanks to the endless delays, all my subsquent flights were delayed to my delight. The worst part? I didn't even bother with FF miles. Btw, that was the last time I let my travel agent handle my booking.  Big grin

RDU-CVG-JFK-FRA-SIN-MAA on DL and SQ in June 1994 (my last DL L-1011 flight ever was the CVG-JFK  Sad ).

Return was early the next month, MAA-SIN-AMS-JFK-ATL-RDU also on SQ/DL.
