LH Mothballing 43 Planes, Axes More Longhauls

Fri Oct 26, 2001 2:36 am

Lufthansa annouced today, that another major part of their longhaul fleet will be grounded in the winter, many routes will be suspended (read: axed). These include:

DUS-EWR
MUC-EWR
MUC-LAX
MUC-SFO
MUC-GRU
FRA-SAH (Sana)
CGN-BHX
TXL-LCY

other routes out of FRA & MUC will be reduced.

possibly: MUC-SIN will be suspended
however, they still plan to start MUC-JNB and MUC-PVG services.

this goes along with the following route suspensions / cuts already annouced:

TXL-IAD

service on those routes will be reduced:
FRA-NYC (one daily axed)
FRA-IAD (one daily axed)
FRA-ATL (daily > 6 weekly)
FRA-DFW (daily > 5 weekly)
FRA-IAH (daily > 5 weekly)
FRA-PHL (daily > 5 weekly)
FRA-PHX (daily > 4 weekly)

all in all, very bad news  Sad

Any sources for that? "Rheinische Post" (newspaper) wrote, that LH wants to mothballing 43 planes. But they said nothing special about the route cancellations.
Moreover, I thought LH want to axe only one flight to Newark (i think DUS-EWR)?

regarding the additional cuts, i would strongly assume most of them will return next summer.
and taking a look especially at MUC, i don´t believe these cuts will remain in place for much longer than this winter period.
they might be operated less frequently than this year, but demand will eventually pick up again.
let´s just hope that´ll be rather early...

better reducing or axing services than risking heavy losses on these routes...

Wow, so Munich has lost all service to New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco? Plus, Austrian has suspended Miami-Munich for the winter schedule (returns 8 April). Not good for Munich. I think this leaves just daily Chicago, Dulles, and Atlanta flights. Hope all these flights return soon! And now Dusseldorf's only daily trans-Atlantic flight is to O'Hare, with five other frequencies spread over Miami, Los Angeles, Ft. Meyers, and Orlando.

MAH4546,

IIRC, MUC still has daily US B762 flights to PHL as well. MUC has really been hit hard, loosing about half of its flights to the US, hope those flights will be resumed next spring.
I'm really surprised LH is thinking about axeing SIN, whereas offering new flights to JNB. Can't believe there is more demand to JNB than to SIN, especially with the SQ codeshare.
