Coming Soon: United Express CRJs LAX-PHX

Fri Oct 26, 2001 4:01 am

I was pulling up availablity on United from Los Angeles to Phoenix in February out of curiousity after hearing of the demise of United Shuttle. Much to my surprise, I found that they will have 6 daily flights on a CRJ, presumably operated by SkyWest. I also noticed that LAX to Tucson will be served by 4 CRJs. I find it odd that I haven't heard anything or read any news releases on this rather monumental change.

I found that Mesa's CRJ's are replacing 4 of the 6 daily America West flights from BUR-PHX, I believe starting November 1. I'm flying BUR-PHX/PHX-BUR on Nov.5, now having the chance to fly a CRJ out of my home airport.

Due to the RJs replacing Shuttle, LAX-FAT will be upgraded with RJs on 2 flights a day. That will allow Skywest to move equipment from the LAX operation to maintenance in Fresno.

SBA is also getting CRJ flights soon--from both LAX and SFO.

Lindy Field: My logic is that: if UAExpress can profitably operate CRJs on routes like LAX-SBA, which is used primarily for connections then they could almost certainly operate them on SAN-LAX, again, a route used primarily for connections (and incidentally longer than that of LAX-SBA.

Has Eagle taken over any previous AA flights here on the West Coast? If Unitied goes CRJ out of SAN, I wonder if AE will switch to Junglejets?

Iwareboy:

AA makes a lot wiser decisions than UA ever has lately. Don't expect Carty and clan in Dallas to EVER follow what our piss-poor, pitiful people in Chicago do. American would be wise to do the opposite of anything Goodwin might come up with. We all must remember that that sorry excuse trailortrash for a CEO, James E. Goodwin, has the Midas touch...in reverse.

Afterall, we at United do not have any management, direction, money, logic, or hope. None whatsoever. And, apparently, our mysterious Board of Directors seem reluctant to quickly find a replacement for Goodwin/Dutta/Studdert. It's clear that for reasons quite unkown to us frontline employees, certain individuals at UA headquarters deliberately want this company to fail.

Getting back to your question, if AA does choose Eagle out of SAN, you'd better believe it is because of wise, well thought-out planning on AA's part. Again, I really think AA knows better than to follow anything that UA does.

Gee... There really is a lot of bad will at UA right now! I hope for the company and it's employees sake, that you get a new leader that can work to heal some of these bad feelings...

My question is where the hell are all of these RJs coming from?!? These will most certainly have to be new planes coming to Skywest, but then where the hell are they getting these planes from. It is great that places like FAT and SBA are getting RJs... but Phoenix??? PHX has always been home to a large United operation... but putting all 6 flights on RJs seems stupid. LAX is the BIGGEST market from Phoenix. Even American, with a much smaller operation at LAX has been able to run 5 daily MD-80s on LAX-PHX... what is United thinking. I can understand shifting Tucson to the RJs, but Phoenix.... While many have not been pleased with Shuttle's less than stellar service, lets not throw the baby out with th bath water.

Interesting that UA is gonna put RJ's on LAX-PHX cuz AA cut their 5 MD-80 flights. Talk about a massive cut in capacity all the sudden on the route!

Looks like major cuts for other carriers on PHX-LAX too.

United used to operate 6-7 daily 737-300/500s on the shuttle. For Nov 1 it is just 6 RJs... that is more than a 50% drop in capacity.

America West used to have bus-like frequencies to LAX from PHX. Used to be 15 a day, now just 8. But 1x on a 757, 3x on a 319, and 4x on a 320.

Southwest still has bus-like frequency with 18 daily flights. I have no idea how many had prior to 9-11.

Plus American did operate 5x daily with the MD-80. Prior to all of this there were around 50 flights a day just to LAX alone... easily close to 75-80 if you count LGB, BUR, ONT, and SNA. Seems like such a hard hit for such a major route.

Some other new United Express regional jet flights out of LAX are:

LAX-PHX
LAX-TUC
LAX-SBA
LAX-SJC
LAX-SMF
LAX-OAK
LAX-FAT

These will be operated by SkyWest Airlines, and Air Wisconsin. Both carriers will utlilize the 50 seater Canadair Regional Jet or CRJ.

The flights to SBA will be operated by AWAC and SkyWest. AWAC will opeate the CRJ, while SkyWest sends Brasilias like they have done prior to the september 11th attacks.

SkyWest Airlines will also be operating all CRJ flights on the OAK segmants, PHX segmants, and TUC segmants. SkyWest will continue to send the EMB-120 Brasilia to SBA and FAT, but Fresno (FAT) will be recieving jet service too for positioning.

Service to San Jose will be carried out by United, AWAC, and SkyWest. United will be operating an A319 on this route, and both SkyWest and AWAC will send the CRJ.

Service to SMF will be carried out by United and AWAC. United will operate an Airbus A319 on that route, and AWAC will operate the CRJ.

Hope that helps.

The RJs are coming at the expense of other routes. FAT is losing the CRJs on FAT-SFO, at least until more aircraft arrive. Additionally, FAT-DEN was scheduled to go to 4 RTs in November but instead will be cut to only 2 RTs, again until more equipment is available.

As far as AA/AE, Eagle has eliminated all BFL-LAX service (6 flights/day).

Are the AWAC 146s still doing DEN-SBA. Is there any flight with a 146 that is longer at 916 miles?
