What's Your Geatest Regret Regarding Aviation?

Fri Oct 26, 2001 5:54 am

Here are a few of mine:

1. Never seeing Kai Tak Sad

2. Photographing Eastern during its last year--they had
repainted the aircraft, the nose looked slightly different.
3. Not seeing O-Hare before UA & AA got rid of DC-10 & 727 Sad

What are yours????

1. Never once going down to airport in '93 when it was served by CP 737's...than again I was only 11 Sad

2. Not appreciating the CRA livery when it was still around. You dont know how much you might miss something until its truely gone Sad

3. Not bringing my camera to the airport this summer when one evening a CRA F28 came instead of dash 8.....such a terrible feeling Sad

4. Moving away for YKA 5 days before CRA F28's are due to begin a Saturday service.....my second chance at getting photos of one here at YKA and ill miss it by five days Sad

.....all in all this is one cruel hobby...

Flying on a pair of MEA 707s but being really ill with flu caught from my seatmate on an Air France 747 the day before and being incredibly ill and not enjoying the experience as much as I could have.

Not doing WHATEVER IT TOOK to get a ride on a pax DC8. (Air Marshall Islands?)

Not sure what you guys'll make of this, but I was at an airshow with a broadcast quality camera when a plane crashed. I was looking the other way. In a way I'm glad I didn't see it or film it but if a plane is going to crash 200 yards away, would you prefer to be watching or not? I don't file this under 'regrets', my only regret is that a family man who was flying to give the crowd enjoyment lost his life. But I saw other people's cruddy domestic quality vidcam footage on TV and I wonder if I'd filmed it with my broadcast machine, I could have sold it to the news networks and given the money to the man's family or the Airmen's Benevolent Fund or something. It was a fucking awful weekend, there were three crashes, a Vampire (two dead), something else (no deaths) and a rare WW2 fighter (one dead - the one that went in right in front of me). Horrible and confusing day.

That I never rode the jumpseat for landing before it became totally outlawed. That's something that I really wanted to do, and came close to doing, but never got to in the end.

No 707s, 880s, 990s, 747s or any late model propliners like Viscounts, Electras or similar in my log book.

"Ho-humming" at another Braniff 727, Eastern Whisperjet or Texas International DC9 when I was growing up just a mile from the San Antonio Intl. Airport.

Seeing the planes after 9/11. The security is tighter and it might not get back to normal. I hope it goes back to normal. I don't know.

Oh, I just remembered the ULTIMATE regret. Flying to Kai Tak on a Cathay 747-200 (from Sydney) and GETTING THE JUMPSEAT, only to find it was the ONE DAY A MONTH (approx) when winds necesitated the straight-in approach over the sea. And knowing I wouldn't get a chance to return before the advent of Chek Mi Kok or whatever it's called. To say I was upset would be the understatement of the century (any century). AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!

When I was a child, my family was booked on the old Frontier Airlines from Wichita to Denver, while the remainder of our itinerary was on Continental. I told them we could just go to the Continental counter, and they'd book us on one of their flights for the short hop to the Denver hub. Shortly afterwards, the old Frontier shut down, and while I have flown the new Frontier often, I can never say that I flew the old Frontier.

1. Never flying on a 747, dammit. And since ETOPS, most of the places I have any interest in going are now served by twins.

2. Passing on a chance to fly in a Hurricane Hunter C130..(the guy who DID go blew chunks everywhere, as I'm sure I would have...but I doubt I'd ever get nervous about turbulence again!)

3. Never getting my own radio morning show, cause it seems like it's those guys who always get invited up on Blue Angels and Thunderbirds press junkets.

Losing all the pictures I took between 1968 and 1985. Women can be so vindictive sometimes. Oh well, at least I have a beautiful daughter. Seh's worth much more. I can see pictures from this era easily enough. I still remember the sight of the 707/DC-8/VC-10/CV880 etc.

Here are a few of my regrets...
1. Resigning from Frontier Airlines.
2. Having never flown in a L-1011.
3. Never been able to afford flying lessons.
Regards.

Not being able to go on an L-1011, they'll probably all be gone before I get a chance.

I have no regrets.

1. I wish I could have flown on a CV880/990, but that was way before my time. I did manage to get on a Skyworld 707-300 and United DC-8-71 though.

2. I wish I had a better experience on my Pan Am 747. The service sucked though.

3. Never flew on MGM Grand Air.

4. I wish I was able to fly on the sea planes between Long Beach and Catalina.

5. I wish there weren't so many plain efficient aircraft nowadays. I like planes with a little smoke, a little noise, performance that pushes you back in your seat. I miss the days when DC-10s and 747s were the standard on any flight over 3 hours.

1. Not making it to Kai Tak.
2. Not getting to fly on Pan American World Airways.
3. Not getting to fly on a DC-8.
4. Not getting to fly Braniff's "The Great Pumpkin" from DFW to HNL. I flew it to LGW once, came back on the 747SP. 5. Watching Braniff go out of business. It was one of the saddest days of my life.
