How Come NWA Is The Only US Carrier Into Malaysia?

Thu Jul 15, 1999 6:16 am

I have often wondered why is it that NO US carrier operated flights into Malaysia - until February this year when Northwest Airlines recommenced its service after a 15-year gap.

Northwest even today only operates a little DC10 feeder service into Osaka-Kansai from Kuala Lumpur. Its not like there are few travellers between the two countries. The US still remains one of Malaysia's largest trading partners and US tourist arrivals into Malaysia lie within the top 10.

For years, only Malaysia Airlines operated between LAX and KUL (until they started a Newark-Dubai-KUL 777-service - incidently, one of the world's longest one-hop flights).

It's just always struck me as somewhat odd - that S.E.Asia is so inaccessible to US-carriers...any thoughts?

At one time, UA showed great interest in operating to KUL, as they had the route authority from Pan Am. UA was planning on operating into KUL, as they had it on their route map in the inflight magazine (the mag. before Hemispheres and Vis a Vis). Don't know what happened...UA did the same with flights to Vietnam...anyone know why?

Seems a shame with KUL's brand new award-winning International Airport charging very little - that few airlines (except KLM and Lauda Air) have taken advantage of its location...isn't it.

I reckon with KLM and MAS in code-share and NWA and MAS in code-share...KUL may well become the Asian hub for this temporarily named 'Wings' alliance.

KLIA...what a nice looking airport! It is a shame...hopefully with the new 777's UA is ordering (which will also be used on the intra-asia routes) UA will start service into KUL!

You are right, Fly777UAL, UA were planning to commence flights to KUL but somehow they never eventuated. I think this was around the time the Asian crisis kicked in. I suppose their really isnt that great a demand for a lot of flights on the route. MH's LAX and EWR service is probably sufficient enough. And then there are always flights via SIN on SQ.

Hey All,

Some very insightful (and accurate) observations about current service between the U.S. and Malaysia. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the underlying issue is one having to do with the Bilateral Agreement between the two nations. Either it doesn't allow for more frequencies by carriers other than those referenced above, or as two of you mentioned, the options to fly haven't been exercised due to the economic crisis and market forces. I read recently, that traffic is expected to increase significantly within the next few years.

Regards.

I read it about a month ago that NW were planning to start Osaka-Jakarta flights sometime in 2000, but nothing definite has been confirmed. I also read that Garuda are ready to resume its LA route before the year is out.

NW already operates a KIX-KUL DC10 service and plans are underway to make this route a code-share with MAS. This KIX-KUL service feeds passengers from NW's flight 96 from La Guardia (NY) and Detroit. This service started in Feb this year and replaced the originally planned SEA-KIX-KUL-CGK route. NW will also begin placing its own flight nos. on MAS' daily LAX-TPE/NRT-KUL and EWR-DXB-KUL route.

I believe there is actually an 'open skies' agreement with the US and Malaysia. The only problem is the lack of stopover/refuelling rights with intermediate countries.
