A300/A310/A330/A340 Same Nose?

Mon Oct 29, 2001 11:43 pm

Just looking thru some pics I noticed that all the airbus a/c except for the A320 family have the same nose! They're literally identical - does airbus have one mould??

The shape is the same...but the materials made to produced them and the technique for moulding and curing them are different.

I'm not sure if they have same attachement points, so I doubt they are interchangeable, though.

Well...the 737's all share the same shape..
and the 767 and 777 share the same nose as well.
The 757 shares the same front windscreen as the 767 (and now the 777).
It's amazing how they reduce design and production cost by having common parts..

I wouldn't call Airbus boring, if they have the same nose.
Just think of Boeing. The have the same nose for their narrowbodies for nearly 50 years (starting with the 707/727 and now on the 737NG.) Douglas did the same with the DC-8/ DC-9 /MD-80. And now you find the "same" nose on the 717 (MD-95).
If it is a proven and reliable design, why not?

All Airbus widebodies use the same fuselage except that the A330/A340 one is an upgraded one...
That helped Airbus keep prices low while developing the A330 and A340. Smart move I would say...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the 757 and 767 employ a "double bubble" nose profile/cross-section while the 777 employs a "single bubble" one?

Here's another one: the Comet and the Caravelle have identical noses. I don't know how to post photos here, perhaps someone could oblige and show us the result of the unique licensing deal Sud Aviation did with de Havilland?

Doesn't make the Comet or the Caravelle boring either, the Caravelle was invariably exciting, especially on landing.

To post a pic: see the help page where it tells you the syntax about 2/3 of the way down.

Actually, every Airbus widebody plane made so far (A300B1 prototype all the way to the current A340-600) have a very common fuselage design--one that can accommodate two LD3 containers side-by-side in the cargo hold.

Sure, there are substantial differences (most notably the cockpit changes from the A300B1 with its 3-crew seating to the A330/A340 with its two-crew seating, structural strengthening to handle more fuel and fuselage lengthening, and cabin interior design changes), but its general shape has not changed much.
