Aircraft & Flights

Tue Oct 30, 2001 2:02 am

This may be sort of confusing so I`ll try my best. Say there is a daily flight from JFK-LAX. does the same exact plane fly that route every day. ex. N100UA will fly JFK - LAX every day. or do different planes fly the routes on different days?

Ah... I have an answer! I live in an area of Washington State called the Tri-Cities. Our main airport, Tri-cities intnl. airport (KPSC) is served by 5 major airlines (2 if you don't consider Sky West, Horizon, or United Express as major airlines). The airlines that serve here are those listed above, and also Delta and FedEx. Well, we have a Delta flight depart at about 8pm every night. I, being an avid plane spotter, usually memorize the N numbers and check for pics of the planes here. All the Delta flights out of here are 737-200's. Every day, the N number on the aircraft is different, and the one that flies over my house every day is, on certain days, in the old colours, and on others, new colours, so obviously different aircraft.

Unless an airline is very small, it is highly unlikely that the same aircraft will fly the same route every day. Take the LAX-JFK example you gave. After that aircraft arrives at JFK it would likely not turnaround to LAX, but would go somplace else.

It is my feeling that the airlines try to rotate the aircraft onto different routes, so that when they are due for maintenance, they cycle through cities where they have maintenance bases, thus avoiding/minimizing costly ferry flights.

I could be totally wrong about this though.

Thanks for the replies. I thought that they were different planes on different days, but I had to make sure
