This should work out well for Qantas. AA and CO feed Qantas a LOT of business, especially via frequent flyer redemptions. I'm sure AA is making it worth it for Qantas to fly those people for 80-125 thousand FF miles per/person.
I was wondering how would this work out. Qantas is an Australian airline based primarily in SYD and MEL. How can it operate a round trip between AKL(being in New Zealand) and DFW?....or is the flight going to originate from SYD or MEL. Because otherwise its like LH operating a round trip between LHR and JFK...
I'l be glad if someone can clear this out for me.
Goes back a few years I think - QF and Air NZ were given reciprocal rights to fly to LAX from their respective hubs - part of an agreement for closer economic ties between Australia and New Zealand. However, I think it was QF that was first given the rights to fly AKL - LAX and vv to which Air NZ responded with a request for SYD-LAX and vv, and which as has already been mentioned, flights continued to their own hubs.
Yer got to love that NZ14/15 flight between SYD and LAX, a foreign airlines flight starts in a foreign country (Australia) and terminates in a foreign country (U.S.A) without going to the airlines home country !!
At least the QF flight to the U.S and Argentina have the decency to originate and terminate in Australia.
If you are talking about 5th Freedom rights, look no further than the QF B767 that used to fly SIN-BKK-HKG.
Flight started in Singapore as part of the complexing of the kangaroo route. Eventually HKG got its nose out of joint over diluting CX's pick-up (read monopoly) and that sector was stopped.
As to the NZ and Australian rights, it is part of the open sky's agreement put in place some 8 years ago allowing any carrier of either nation the opportunity to operate from either country to another destination.
Something that the USA, and all it's rhetoric about "open skys" and 'free trade' has yet to embrace internally, despite pushing for it in other countries.
KHI747, fifth-freedom. A carrier from country A can fly between country B and country C with 5th freedom. The best examples of this are Northwest's hub at Tokyo Narita and Iberia's hub at Miami International.
Oz777, the old QF flights between SIN/BKK/HKG (known as the golden triangle at QF if memory serves correct) actually routed from memory BKK/HKG/SIN/PER from memory, but I do know there was an Australian city actually included in the schedule. SIN/BKK sector was part of the QF5 SYD/SIN/BKK/FRA. the BKK/HKG sector was the one which kicked up a stink at CX.
Of course no need to do those flights now as CX do them and they are of course part of One World, but I would be surprised if QF passengers actually get booked on CX if the travels include one of those sectors. QF still do PER/SIN/HKG of course.
I remember when CX were complaining to the OZ government there was talk that the government would only allow CX to fly to one Australian city as QF could only fly to one city in Hong Kong and they were going to designate Adelaide, everything quiten down pretty quickly after that and of course QF stopped flying BKK/HKG !!
I thought it was AKL-HNL-DFW-LGW, but no stress. I could check in my timetables from the era if anyone was really interested? (I've got Air NZ timetables back to 1984, sad hu!)
As the QF service will be nonstop it might do better. Air NZ started their services to DFW if I remember with a big carry on about the benefits of connecting into AA's hub, not that it got them anywhere it would seem.
But heres a question for you all -
Do you think QF will drop its daily AKL/LAX sector and only operate the AKL/DFW sector? I just cant see the need for two QF 744 services from AKL to the US each night myself, even if they do start in Oz. Maybe the AKL/DFW services will only operate a few times a week?
If I were Qantas I would route the flight SYD-AKL-DFW maybe 3x a week and if it is successful, why not open another route such as SYD-PPT-DFW for the other 4 weekly flights. After all, QF no longer flies to PPT, and it would be a good way to offer the destination once again. Also I'm sure Air Tahiti Nui (and AA) would be happy to codeshare on the services too.
