Airline With The Best/Worst In-flight Catering?

Fri Nov 02, 2001 5:16 am

The questions says it all. Which airline do you think has the best/highest quality of food served on-board? Conversely, which carrier serves the worst food ever consumed by a passenger?

I really consider Lufthansa as one of the best inflight catering on international flights.
Varig was really not good, specially departing GRU to international destinations. Not doubt the worst bread on board(Coach).

Airlines with the BEST food I enjoyed in-flight:
1. Wardair Canada (aaah, that Filet Mignon!!)
2. Finnair (EXCELLENT cuisine)
3. Singapore Airlines (Superb)

And, the WORST food I ever digested in-flight was with:
1. Eastern Airlines (food so bad it's beyond description).
2. American Airlines ("Something Sh_ _ _ _ in the Air")
3. Mexicana (Montezumas revenge, anyone?).

I like Virgin Atlantic's food. Salad is always fresh, and the food just, well it looks and tastes like the airline actually cares. I've had awful meals - ex) British Airways, Continental. So my vote goes to VS.
Work Hard. Fly Right. Continental Airlines

Qantas does a pretty good job with their long-haul economy class food; portions bigger than one would expect and, amazingly, with more taste and texture than shirt cardboard!

Best Catering I Experienced -> KLM, Air France

I've heard of bad catering at Lufthansa from relatives that have flown it but it surprises me so i don't know if this was just an isolated case......

This really depends on the class of service. The best overall I have had is CX in business (never done CX in first). AA has decent food in coach on international flights, and really good in business and first (including caviar & lobster in first). Their domestic coach food is not so good, and actually all but disappearing as of today! Worst airline food I've ever had - Sabena.
Regards.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines had a real good dinner (pasta, Atlanta/Hartsfield - Amsterdam/Schipol). But their breakfast was horrible! Soggy eggs, burnt ham...yuck!

I'm kind of a sucker for Continental's cold chicken sandwhich...don't ask, LOL

LH really is not very good, nor is BA. I've always had good food on UAL International. But you know, it all depends on the menu for that particular month and route.

Best I think I've ever had (having always travelled in economy) was on Qatar Airways. Virgin was pretty good as well.
Some of the charters I've been on, well the less said the better...

I've not flwon on that many airlines.

I think SQ provides wonderful food. Also CX as maybe the food suits me.Just like people said, comparing with Qantas and Ansetts catering on domestic routes, Qantas has made me dissapointed, with Ansett suprising me!

Best Regards

Don't forget THAI and their Thai food.

Meals in economy class is pretty good. It is even better in business and first class with some exotic THAI snacks and cuisine.

KLM Business Class is good, I had a great Indonesian meal AMS-ALA!

KLM uk MAN-AMS was shite, which is in keeping with the airline and service! A bacon, cheese and tomato roll nuked out of existence.

UAL Economy was good SFO-LHR.

bmi shuttle LHR-MAN is good, in the afternoon, you get a proper English cream tea! By contrast, BA LGW-MAN just chuck out a sandwich in a box, again a reflection of their opinion of their passengers!

EAL401 Raised a very good point, and I concur. The quality of in-flight catering and overall service does indeed reflect the overall opinion carriers have of their passengers. I am still disgusted by the fact that American Airlines, and I believe, United, have cut out all meal service on flights 3hours or less. Mind you, with the questionable quality of food they served to begin with, perhaps this is a good thing for the passengers.

I still shudder when I remember the contents of the American Airlines "Bistro Bag" I picked up at the departure gate before boarding my DFW-ORD flight
2 years ago. A stale ham sandwich (the bun was so hard I could knock it against my meal tray) A stale chocolate chip cookie, a half-rotten apple, and a warm
small bottled water. Classy, very classy.

Singapore Airlines and Thai. Singapore Airlines because of the effort the international culinary panel actually creates dishes for all three classes. Great effort and great food.

Thai because for some strange reason or another, they love serving pomelo, which is a tropical fruit especially prevalent in Thailand. I love the fruit, which is why i love the food on Thai.

I fly mostly long haul...

LH has excellent food in business with a series of special menus executed by the most famous chefs in the world ( outbound from Germany) that is really exceptional in quality and creativity ( tuna sashimi with chutney as appetizer for example).
Their first is awesome with a DOUBLE round of severuga caviar with blinis and at least 4 condiments ( their amouse bouche appetizers are VERY yummy).
The wine selection by world champion Marcus Del Monego is stunninf considering the pressurization of the cabin and the flight attendants are trained in the wines selection and when you are not sure of what you would like they let you try all of them  Smile/happy/getting dizzy 35.000 feet degustations!!!( although also Finnair in biz has a great cellar, multiawarded).

Other great food was with CX in biz ( I love that they serve from the cart and you can actually see what the offers are) and then canapes and the first class style personalized catering is super.

Sabena to US was ( for the three times I tried it) surprisingly good. They work with young and promising chefs and they were very creative. The catering from US to Europe is generally of inferior quality due to the lest skilled chefs ( I have heard this also from one of the exec managers of LSG that was flying sitting close to me on a leg from JFK to FRA).

I was pleasantly surprised by UA to Portorico last february in economy when I was offered two choices of hot breakfast in economy and it was tasty and quite good.

Love the Do&Co catering of Lauda ( especially their Sacher torte!)

Scandinavian always treats me with fresh salmon with dill and northern delicacies...

SAA: great food ( especially their game) and cool desserts

the worst:
all those little "sky deli" or whatever name they are called...the carrot and dip and other mystery food of AA,DL, CO domestic...

I LOVE food!!!!! Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Air India used to be crap, the airhostesses are upper cast ladies and they don´t what service is! Only flew
once with them Frankfurt-Oz return and on the
way back, I brought my own peanuts and beer. Some
Indian passenger told me to ask the airhostesses for it,
but I refused, they where not intrested in selling anything...

Don't you think a lot of it depends on the caterers used? And quite often many of the airlines use the same caterers. Furthermore, if you fly out of a small airport where the caterer has a monopoly you may well get lousy food and there's nowt the airline can do about it.

So don't make a judgement until you've flown on different routes with the same airline so you can form an opinion on their actual policy, not just what you had on a particular day.

I don't fly on many flights long enough to offer meal service, but any meal I've had on Alaska Airlines has been quite palatable, which apparently is more than can be said for most airline food.
