Helpless Customer SwissAir Question

Sat Nov 03, 2001 9:19 am

Back in June, I took a trip to Greece. It was the trip of my life, but SwissAir was the carrier that took me there. The flight really wasn't that bad, it was the customer service I absolutely hated. My luggage was lost on the way, somewhere between Zurick and Athens. I understood that sometimes these things happen, and I was fortunate enough to pack a change of clothes and toiletries in my carry-on. As the days went by, they told me they were working on it and to keep calling. I was to recieve US$100 for clothes I needed to buy while I was there. Needless to say, the only way they would give me that money was either in the form of a check two days before I left or at the airport. At the airport they told me I had to do it at SFO (where I'm from). I was so fed up I just went home. It is now November, I filed a claim for roughly the amount of $1,000. I know at least that much was in there in my large dufflebag, but they recently told me the most I will recieve for one bag is $640. They keep telling me their accounts are on freeze or something, but I know I filed the claim before Sept. 11. I've been trying to be understanding as much as humanly possible, I've called at least once a week. I don't know what else I can do. It doesn't seem to make sense to yell at someone that can not change what I"m fighting against anyways. Does anyone have any suggestions, I'm desperate here. By the way, ASU's aviation department is great. Except for the delay in flying, I've been very happy with it. I don't think many people know about it. Thanks for you time...

I'm just curious, what were the dates of your trip? I went to Greece this summer in June on Swissair and I was wondering if you might have been on the same flight as I was. It was a morning flight on June 16 on an A321. My email is charredbanana@aol.com if you want to answer me (don't worry about it if you don't) but would rather do it over email.

Your luggage was lost between ZRH and ATH? Did they open the pit and throw it out?

Sorry. Sometimes looking at things in a irreverant fashion is the best way to go. Look on the bright side, you had a vacation in Greece, made it home safely and have money and housing. It was just clothing. Chalk it up to lifes experience. I hope this is the worst thing that ever happens to you, but I doubt it will be.

Fat chance you'll get anything. Swissair, the company that you are filing a claim against is in a Swiss (almost) equivalent to Chapter 11. They are and will not be obliged to give you any money. Since Crossair will take over part of Swissair, the new company won't have to pay either, since it's a whole different company. Life can be hard, keep your chin up.

It just really upsets me that there is nothing I can do. You would just think that someone that has responsibility for your items should have to pay up if they damage or lose it like that. If a friend trusted me to take care of his boom box, and I lost it, I don't think they would be happy if I said I'd only give them half of the money for it. That would be if I gave them any money at all. I mean, I'm just a kid, starting college. It's not like this money makes or breaks me, but I had a lot of things in there I need to replace and not having the money is starting to hurt. I know all I'm going to end up doing is complainning about it, I was just hoping someone might have an idea...
Thanks again,

P.S. : Airplanetire, I flew on June 19th. They told me that they lost a LOT of luggage around a week of that time in Zurick, but they never told me why.

Well it's obvious that they won't get you 1000$. I guess no airline would do this, especially if it was in coach (or wasn't it ?)

Check the ticket. There's usually a clause in the terms that limits the airline's laibility to a certain amount.
With Swissair in receivership, you won't get a cent.
The taxman comes first, then the banks, then any companies that are owed money. Only after that are private individuals given a shot, but if there were anything left at that point the company would not be in receivership at all...

Your best bet is your travel insurance, and even that is a long shot as your bags were lost at a point when you had handed them to someone else temporarilly (and losses when you are not in control are usually not covered).
I wish I were flying
