Ryanair In Norway

Sat Nov 03, 2001 6:54 pm

"Ryanair is reportedly looking at the possibilities of launching domestic routes in Norway.
In the meantime Ryanair has applied for approval to launch routes from Stavanger, Bergen and Trondheim to London while any domestic routes will have to wait at least a year."

Someone knows something more about it??

Are Norwigian airports taxes the same for domestic and international flights, or for domestic flights are cheaper??

Gosh, Norway here we come!

Perhaps FR will receive a discount on the landing fees, or the airport authorities will offer no fees for a set period?

I suggested GO might try the Newcastle-Bergen route, as apparently many Norwegians presently use the ferry to come over to Newcastle for cheaper Xmas shopping....perhaps Norwegians are equally as likely to use any service to London for the same reasons?

Do we envisage many using the service FROM London? I have nothing against Norway, it's a beautiful country, but not one that would immediately spring to mind as a holiday destination for the average British punter?

Does Norway have a lack of reasonable domestic services?

Would FR be allowed to set up a domestic operation there, as Norway is not a member of the EU(?)

Ryanair is planning to launch a service to Stavanger this winter. Flights to Bergen and Trondheim will not start untill next summer. At the moment SAS has only one daily flight from Stavanger to London (Heathrow).

Re: Capt.Picard
I don't think Ryanair will start domestic services in Norway. They are allowed to (Norway is an EEC member), but it will be almost impossible to compete against SAS/Braathens.

One of the prerequisites stated by Ryanair to start operations from SVG and TRD is lower airport fees for them alone, not other operators. The Norwegian CAA maintains that fees have to be equal to all operators but they can accept lower fees in a startup period to attract new operators at various airports.

The day the low cost operators (easyJet or Ryanair) decide to compete with SAS on intra-Scandinavia flights, is the day that SAS will go down. SAS doesn't make money in Norway in the current environment let alone making money if they have a serious competitor.

Get a discount from the Norwegian airports? FR only operate on a deal-basis. The only place they pay tariff is LGW. Every other airport is screwed on a deal. Some of the Europeans pay FR for the privilege of FR service. The only reason FR will operate on Norwegian domestic routes is because someone is throwing a ton of money at them (and they will probably make it work, too).

The norwegian market have been quite turbulent, but it will probably get better when Braathens is bought by SAS. A lot of over capacity will be cut, and I think that SAS might be profitable in Norway again.
But things might change if Ryanair goes in to the market soon.

Ryanair is planning to start a third daily flight from "Oslo South Airport" (TRF) to Stansted. We will probably see more Ryanair flights from Norway to London over next years, but the will never try to fight against SAS on the domestic market.

Recently, didn't Ryanair unilaterally decide to only pay 50% of Aer Rianta's charges at some sort of protest against their rates?
