What Is Your Favorite Approach Into An Airport?

Sun Nov 04, 2001 3:35 am

What is your favortite approach into any airport in the world and why? I have a few favorites. San Diego is great. You come in over the mountains and then you're right over the city flying really low. You get to see all the buildings and the sailboats parked in the ocean. You also get to fly over Balboa park and the aerospace museum in it, which is very interesting. I like the approach into ORD also if you fly in over the city. ZRH is great too. It is really pretty and green in the summer and if you fly in over the Alps, it's breathtaking. ATH is interesting too. It looks just like southern California. The city of Athens appears sprawl out in every direction. Those are my favorite approaches. What are yours?

IND's eastern approach passes very close and low to downtown (brightly lit in the nighttime), it's quite nice.

Although my favorite must be either PHL or CLE - both have good views of the magnificent downtown and the surrounding city, and at PHL there's an approach where it looks like you're going to land in the river!  Laugh out loud

EGE(vail). You fly right over the mountains untill about 50 meters to the runway, you get very low and it almost seems like you will touch them.

I also like LHR, you pretty much take an overhead tour of the city, it is really neat.

ZRH is okay, it is pretty much a bunch of green grass and hills(in summer) and then you land. It is pretty, but not exciting.

HFA
Come in from the southeast. If you are a good lander, you won't plunge to the bottom of the Mediteranean.

I like LCY (London City) very much. The approach is over the Tames, and you can get some views of the city.

You can't forget landing at LGA when you land on 22. You fly right down the East River and right by the skyline. It is really cool. Also the DCA approach over the Potomac is great.

For some reason I always like to approach Washington Dulles Airport. San Francisco was cool because we came in over the water and it looked like we were gonna touch down in the water.

Although I didn't fly this app before, but i've heard this is very exciting: la Guardia Airport, Expressway Visual 31.
Planes have to make a 225 degrees turn in 1 mile to line up runway 31 on short final, it's also exciting to watch it!

Second, JFK, VOR 13L, you have quite a "kai-tak" feeling if you are riding on a 747, you would fly over the residential area just above 1000 ft, and the most remembered part, just 300 ft from threshold, i saw 3 Polar Cargo park below, about 500 feet. Smile

Personally I like the approach into ams because of its spectacular flat, green, dutch scenery with the canals in between the fields. Closer to home.. i like the 33R approach into YYZ. During the downwind leg you get a close-up birdeye view of downtown toronto with the CN Tower it's really cool  Big thumbs up

PHL because I can give those who don't know the area a little tour... the Air Victory Museum in Medford, Cherokee HS in Marlton (where I go!), Garden State Racetrack in Cherry Hill, etc.

BOS....flying over the harbor and feeling like you are going to land on the water

LXA (Lhasa, Tibet)....cruising over the tops of the Himalayas is always great, and the landing, you come right in between 2 sets of mountains, following a river valley through some of the harshest terrain in the world.
Excuse me, but what does God need with a starship?

Hi,

I like the approach to the new hong kong airport (I don't know how to spell it). On our SIA 744 i seemed as if we were going to touch the water.

I als like Toronto City Centre, gives you an excellent panorama of the skyline.

THen the over the beach approaches are fun: St. Maarten, Kona, Kuaii. I liked HNL we passed right over an aircraft carrier leving for the sea.
