Emirates Orders

Sun Nov 04, 2001 6:50 am

The Dubai Airshow 2001 begins tomorrow (Sunday 4 November). Emirates is expected to formally sign for its initial batch of 7 A380s (5x pax and 2x cargo versions). It is also likely that EK will exercise some of the options on the A380s.

They are also likely to place follow on orders for A330, A340 and B777 aircraft as part of the plan to increase the fleet to over 100 aircraft by 2010 from the current 36.

New destinations to be added to the existing short-list include Shanghai, Osaka, Casablanca, Khartoum and Kochi. Note, Emirates already has received rights to operate to Kochi but only from Sept. 2002. Furthermore, Emirates are trying hard to lobby the Indian govt. to let them fly into Trivandrum and Bangalore as well as getting more seat allocations on their India flights. The other destinations on the short-list include Dublin, Geneva, Aden, Mauritius, Seychelles.

USA flights will commence in early 2003 once the A340-500s arrive and will initially be to JFK, followed by LAX, ORD, YYZ. Other US destinations will follow. Note, PER flights will commence nonstop from October 2002.

On the airbus web site it says Emirates has ordered six A340-500s. Do you think they might be ordering more of those aircrafts? I think the A340-500 has too much range capacity for them, the A340-600 with shorter range might be what they need. Also ordering more 777 wouldn't that be conflicting with ordering A340-500?

Spaceman,
Exercising of more A340-500 is a possibility. However, i disagree with your view that the A345 has too much range. In fact, only this acft will enable them to do DXB-LAX nonstop. Furthermore, Emirates have expressed some interest in the A340-600 following the range increase. But with recent reports that the A346 cannot deliver the promised performance they are likely to take a wait and see approach. Furthermore, it is v.imp that Airbus deliver the A345 with the range promises it originally made because that is why EK opted for it.

As for the 777, the current versions Emirates operates cannot make it non-stop with a full pax and cargo payload to the US from Dubai. This is precisely why the opted for the A345 when Boeing dropped the proposed B777X a few years ago.

Emirates777:

But Malaysian Airlines operates a nonstop flight from Newark to Dubai using a Boeing 777-200, so why Emirates cannot use a 777 in the route?

Do you know what is the reason behind A346's problems unable to deliver the promised performance? I have heard that it's overweight, is that one of the reasons or is it the only reason?

Why they are concerned about wide body jets only ??

Any idea on what some other possible US destinations may be? Houston? Miami? San Francisco? Boston? Also, I though thier plan was to have 210 aircraft by 2010.

Boeing did not drop the 777x. they only deleyed the 200 model by six months. but that does not matter, what relly matters is that they complete the 300 project. That will finaly turn the tide in this war

To answer the questions:

Yes, Malaysian use the B777-200ER from Dubai-Newark. However this flight is operated with a reduced payload in order for it to make it nonstop. Fact is, the 777 cannot make the DXB-NYC run nonstop with a full pax and cargo payload in peak temperatures from Dubai.

I understand the A346's is having performance problems due to a heavier than anticipated wing as well as below expectation efficiency from the Rolls Royce Trents. I guess there have been topics posted on this forum giving the precise details of the performance shortfalls.

Emirates is only concerned about widebodies because these are the acft types they require for their growth objectives - flying more people further. Also the bulk of Emirates focus is developing its network internationally - to be precise to reach every corner of the globe. That is why they are after planes with large capacities and long ranges. For their regional routes they would certainly be better off ordering narrowbodies - but they have decided to go against that. The reality is that narrowbodies would help them lower their losses on many of their regional routes such as MCT, DOH, BAH and KWIl.

North America destinations will be as follows: phase I will be the majors including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Phase II will cover other majors such as San Francisco, Toronto and Houston.

Emirates777 we have talked before about EK have extra capacity on somre regional routes for example operating the B777 on the MCT route. You mentioned above that BAH,KWI and DOH are loss making routes !? Really.....im very surprised..... why would that be the case.....there is quite a bit of traffic and fair amount of frequencies on all these routes. I'd appreciate if you can shed some light on this issue.....
