Why Boeing 747-400's Cruising Speed Is 1100km/h?

Sun Nov 04, 2001 4:04 pm

When I flew from HKG to SYD on Ansett B747-400, the cruising speed was 1100km/hr was shown on PTV and big screen.

I know B747-400's cruising speed is normally 930km/hr. How come the plane flew so fast? That is why I arrived in SYD one hour earlier!

1100km/h is the ground speed contributed by the tail wind.

Actual airspeed might be 930km/h. i realized that too during flights to europe from asia.

most likely a tail wind. I flew DEN-ORD in a 777 with crusing speed at 1060 km/h. which is above normal. we arrived early too.

One time when on LTU A333 from Tenerife to FRA we cruised at 1070km/h. We were late about one hour at takeoff, but captain told us to not worry, "I will catch up in the air". We landed in FRA about 15 minutes early.

On Korean Air B744 from LAX to Seoul, we hit 1111km/h but it still took 12 hours. Where the jet stream related to this?

I flew on a QF 767-300 from Adelaide- Sydney and our GS was 1050 km/h! That's pretty quick for a 767 and i thought that was quite impressive- must have been a hefty tailwind at our alt.

I was flying FRA-SFO and I campared the ground speed I saw on PFD in cockpit and the one that was shown on a flight monitor in a cabin. I discovered that speeds were diferent.

Siriwatthana,

I thought that UA only uses the 744 to FRA in the summer are they now used all year round? Or was your flight just an exception?

Back in 1995 I flew DFW-FRA on a LH A340 and we flew over 1000km/h too. And if the A340 can do that then every plane can...

Does anybody know when the tailwinds can gat dangerous for the plane?

regards,

Max

I flew on a Srilankan A340 from Frankfurt ot Colombo and when we flew to the east(Frankfurt-Colombo) the airspeed was a little above 1000km/h but the way back the airspeed was 700-750km/h.the same thing happened on an Lauda Air B767-300ER flight to Miami from Vienna. The flight to Miami took longer than the one back. And if you look at te timetables you'll se that every plane that is flying to the east is faster than that one flying to the west.
