Why Doesn't Delta Paint Their Planes Faster

Mon Nov 05, 2001 2:45 am

The topic says it all. Gordon Bethune said "Now you listen to me, I want these Goddamn planes painted in a year or less."

I want to fly Delta, But I don't want to fly on a New Plane that looks like an Old Clunker. PLEASE DELTA, PAINT YOUR PLANES FASTER. (Well, After the 9/11 attacks, it may take a while due to the slow economy.)

Not only does DL not paint into their new livery faster, they let old livery planes literally flake away before painting them.

When I was in SLC last month (twice), I have never seen so many awful-condition paint jobs ever.

It was embarrassing for Delta...

I hope they get them painted soon. I Love that New Livery, Especially when It shines in the light of the airlamps.

I like the silver belly on the new ones, but the tail is horrendous. It looks like some sort of cheesy wallpaper that you buy at Kmart. I kind of prefer the livery between the older one and this new one. Just my two cents.

I flew HOU-ATL-CVG and back this summer on Delta. 3 MD-88's, one 757. 4 years after they introduce the new livery, I got stuck on 4 old livery planes. All of the planes at ATL were in new colors, except the ones I flew. CVG was mainly old, and old-new. ATL had a lot of new colors. All of the 757's in CVG were in the new or old-new schemes except for the one I was on.

Though I'd love to see the entire Delta fleet repainted in their newest livery, people need to appreciate the tremendous cost of such an undertaking. Aside from the cost of the actual painting, an aircraft is usually removed from service for at least a week. It would have been difficult enough prior to 9/11, much less after...

Usually an airline waits until an aircraft is due for a major overhaul before repainting it. In 1994 Air Canada briefly had 3 colour schemes on the go. The present one the late 80s/early 90s red & purple and the classic red cheatline was still on a few aircraft before the red & purple was fully applied.
