2 Questions For Avaition Nerds...

Mon Nov 05, 2001 9:32 am

1) Why is the american flag on the right side of planes stuck on backwards. Im sure there is a simple reason, but I cannot figure it out.
2)All airliners have a standard number delineating the aircraft from others in its fleet i.e. 704AS 777AA, why, when communicating with ATC do they use flight numbers instead of the FAA issued number? Is this to make it easier for clearance delivery to 'remember' where planes are headed since flight numbers only change a few times a year? Maybe so that in case of a last minute dreaded mechanical or aircraft swap ATC would not have to change all the numbers in their system?
thx for the help, just a few silly questions I thought of today at work.

1. The only thing I ever found about it has to do with ships. If the flag was mounted on the side of the plane, that is how it would look on that side.

2. During flight ATC uses the airline and flight number. Maintenance uses the ship number when talking with tower/ground control.

I've always thought of the flag being backward as if it were in the proper posion if it was being flown.

Think about it, when a flag is flying, one face will appear backward.

.. and that IS in fact the correct answer: Because that's the way the flag would be facing if it was mounted on a flag pole.

So? That doesn't mean that's how they must paint it!! There must be more to it than that! Someone made the concious decision to start painting the flags backwards. If I were to paint it I wouldn't, so what made someone think that they would do just that?

They use the fli9ght nuber because it is much more easy. What would be more easy N7800 clear for landing or Flight Delta flight 405 clear for landing
