Swissair: "No Alliances, Please!"

Wed Nov 07, 2001 4:41 am

I'm just wondering, Swissair maintained adamantly throughout it's history (recent years) that it would maintain independence and NOT join an Airline Global Alliance team. My question is, would SR have stood a better chance of surviving HAD it belonged to either Star Alliance or Oneworld?. Or did it's over-expansion program negate it's chance of good "health" even if it were an Alliance member?

Does anyone know if Crossair has plans to join an Alliance, once it has restructured for Global flying?

well, Swissair had its own alliance, the Qualiflyer Alliance.
SR invested in some good airlines, but also in some airlines which were not profitable, thus decreasing its value.
well, SR and its affiliates of which the most were in poor shape financially together couldn´t keep up with the other alliances.
if SR would have gone the "joining a major alliance" road right from start and would have not invested so extensively into other airlines, i´m pretty sure that Swissair would still exist as we were used to know it.

afaik, there´s already a topic on this board about Crossair and a possible entry into an alliance in the future.

If only pure sweetness was offered, why's this bitter taste left in my mouth.

SR was also one of the three airlines that formed the first global alliance without a tacky name.  Wink/being sarcastic The alliance involved cross-equity ownership of SR, DL, and SQ. One could argue SR had the vision long before other airlines realized the potential of a strong global alliance. But SR couldn't capitalize on their vision. IMHO, SR's fall was mostly due to bad investments rather than not being a part of a major global alliance. OTOH, the basis of SR's investment strategy was valid. Investing in EU airlines was probably essential for SR's survival because of Switzerland's non-EU status. They just didn't have the right airlines to invest in.

Yes, Crossair will have to join an alliance, its investors say that only if they join a global alliance they will get money. Potential Oneworld member, in my eyes.

Hi Cannuck friend!

Good topic you got, it's quite a challenging to all of us that love air transportation to talk about Swissair and see how these guys just "glidded" down. I think SR didn't want to go to one of those big alliances, this because SR had the same level or even higher than some of them, how could SR survive with a LH or a BA or a KL or a AZ? As soon as the bigger ones started to move SR did what some of us in the beggining expected a good move, create their own alliance - The Qualifyer - but the bad move was that they where surrounded by not real interesting airlines, SABENA? TAP? THY? AOM? all of them where european, no US airline, asian airline either? How could they go further? They invested all their profits buying shares of all those airlines and soon they where swollowed too, SR I think lost the train in mid 90's, I think if they stayed with DELTA and then try to get another good asian airline, let's say Singapore, THAI and then some smaller airlines the things could have been different, now we just pray that SR will start slowly from the scrath and will built a nice and again powerfull network, don't forget that SR in mid-50's also "glidded" down!!!
I don't want to stop seeing that famous red tail with white cross in our skies, it's like seeing the dark tail with the maple leaf, that's the image of those countries!!!
