Court Judgment Concerning Ryanairs "FrankfurtHahn"

Thu Nov 08, 2001 2:46 am

Hi everybody,

a German court just ruled that Ryanair must not advertise their routes from HHN and LBC as "Frankfurt" and "Hamburg" anymore. The court found it misleading for passengers because Hahn is Hahn and not Frankfurt-Hahn, and Luebeck is Luebeck and not Hamburg-Luebeck.

I wonder whether the listings in the OAG will have to be changed as well.

Yeah I've heard about that today, too. I actually wanted to post it here but you were first. Big grin

I think this is absolutely correct because Hahn is not anywhere near FRA and so isn't Luebeck near Hamburg.

By the way the court also ruled that they musn't advertise with the 49DM fare because in the end you pay way more money (taxes ...).

Hi Daniel !

I`ve read about this today in the "Süddeutsche Zeitung". I agree with the court because Lübeck is about 100 km away from Hamburg and Hahn is also not so close to Frankfurt as Ryanair promissed in their ads.

I don't think that the Judge's decision is a good one - Frankfurt/HAHN and Hamburg/LÜBECK indicates the airports are somewhere near the major cities, which attracts customers to use the routes and as such is advantageous to the two airports concerned.

Hi Avion757 !

In the USA it`s the same. Newark is not New York or Oakland is not San Francisco. If i book a flight i want to know the exact destination and not "somewhere in the Hamburg area" !

If this is the case then London Luton should become known as Luton, Venice Treviso should become known as Treviso, Brussels South as Charleroi and so on. The floodgates could open with this one.

Yes, but Luton is CALLED London Luton. That's the name of the airport. The point here is that Hahn in not CALLED Frankfurt-Hahn, apart from in Ryanair's advertising, and the same with Luebeck.

If both these airports were to change their names then there is no reason why Ryanair couldn't refer to them as such, regardless of how far they are from the cities concerned.

Also, Ryanair wants to start flights to "Zurich West" which is actually Basel and nowhere near Zurich. I wonder how they came up with that? I think it's the crack... Smokin cool

How about Dusseldorf-Moenchengladbach, Muenchen-Nuernberg or Wien-Salzburg for some new destinations? How about London-Prestwick as base for Ryanair Transatlantic?  Big grin

In the USA, Southwest Airlines advertises the city name of the airport and then lists the larger destination below it. For instance, the timetable lists "Manchester, NH" in bold font." Underneath, in smaller letters, it notes "Boston Area." You see both where you're landing, and what the nearby big city is.

Years ago I was in Germany and rode between Hamburg and Lubeck; it couldn't have been even an hour. Here in the Washington, DC area lots of folks drive that much between Virginia and Baltimore-Washington airport. Maybe Lubeck and Hahn airports can rename themselves, as suggested above, like BWI did 20 years ago. Eg, "Lubeck-Hamburg Regional Airport." "Flughafen Lubeck-Hamburg."

Moenchengladbach is actually indeed listed under Duesseldorf in the OAG. I believe the official name is even "Duesseldorf Express-Airport Moenchengladbach".
Augsburg is listed under Munich...

Even Mannheim, where I live, is nearer to FRA than HHN - but nobody would think of listing MHG under Frankfurt - because they use the fact that the Mannheimers DON´T have to go to FRA as a marketing tool. That effect would be lost if people conceived MHG only as one of the Frankfurt airports.

Yes Moenchengladbach is known as "Duesseldorf Express-Airport Moenchengladbach".
Flights are even on teletext listed in the DUS flightplan.

Hence no Ryanair flights.

Intersting.

Also note GO is visible on a GDS, but not (yet) bookable. Buzz dont even bother.
