Spotter Girls

Thu Nov 08, 2001 4:28 am

Always when I go spotting to different airports over the world, I met spotters but it are always guys never spotting girls. What is the reason that there are no spotting girls? Or am I wrong? Are there female spotters?

I spot but you probably won't see me unless you are in Milano or Lugano. I think that more and more girls will get interested in aircraft in general as times chenges(I got intertested in spotting when I was six because my uncle was a pilot) Smile.

The only spotting girls I have ever seen came because their boyfriends took them to the airport, to tell them how everything works at there.

This can be really funny, as they often seem to be the first time at the airport and tell her a lot of bullshit.  Laugh out loud

Girls spot horses... and clothes on their weekly shopping-tour. It´s fact!

Alexandria is an exemplary exception.

Hope some more will follow her. Big grin

Yes, we do go spotting. In fact, I met a woman at the SEA spotting park who had to drag her husband to the park and she explained to him what kinds of airplanes they were seeing.

Unfortunatly for Jottier, I'm sure wer're not the type he is looking for, young, long-legged, stary eyed. In fact I would probably be able to have him for breakfast and have enough room for a dozen dougnuts 8^)=).

It is true that girls seem more interested in horses and shopping, but many of us who are really true to ourselves, instead of buying into that cultrual gender role crap, find enjoyment in airplanes, powerful engines and even fishing!

1) "guys never spotting girls".....hmm.....maybe they're not looking for girls???  Smile Or maybe not looking in the right places!
2) I wouldn't use the term "spotting girls" too loosely, people might take it wrong.  Innocent
3) Oh, I don't know, my almost-3 year old daughter loves spotting airplanes. Everytime she sees one, she says 'airplane', and makes airplane sounds.

In the U.S., if a female is even remotely interested in aircraft, United hires them as pilots. They take pictures from the other side of the fence.

It's not just aviation - transportation in general has little interest for women, at least in an enthusiast/hobbyist sense. Female railfans or roadgeeks are probably as scarce as "spotting girls." Why this is so, I don't know. There certainly are enough women employed in the transportation industry.

And this is why it is unrealistic to expect that 50% of pilots will ever be female or why that should not even be a realistic goal. Most women are just not interested in airplanes or flying other than as transportation. Nice pics, incidentally.

And there's something wrong with horses? The women I go for are pure cowgirl. I know airplanes and a little about horses, they know horses and a little about airplanes. What a perfect combination.

Laugh out loudI go spotting sometimes! Well that is not unusual being a member here! Unusual for a female? Well I guess it's a minority.

The comment was made that there will be more female spotters in the future because times are changing, that is true (I hope).

For me, I have always been interested in aviation, but 2001 I am becoming a lot more serious about it. The reasons being that I am tired of being what other people want me to be, or expect me to be, combined with the 'turning 30' complex as well as Polly Vacher's world solo flight inspiration!!

I also find that as a female I probably blend in with the pax more, I'm not sure, what is the stereotype of a spotter!?

It' funny you mention horses, they were my 'life' for 14 years so it's true girls are horse mad! BUT we used to go riding along a beach that was right next to an airport, so you see I had the best of both worlds! Big grin

There are girls at this site (even with photos), I think it would be unfair to mention her name now, as a thousand guys might jump at her, but believe me, there are.

I'm a "spotter lady." I'm sort of the "spotter-in-chief" at the 100th Bomb Group Restaurant, if you would. There are some people who come to spot when they know I'll be there because I know all of the planes and a lot of the scheduling. Check out my webpage (with my half-decent photos):

I actually know one of those people who drags their girlfriend to the airport... I drove by the airport on homecoming night, but I didn't say anything, and she thought I was stairing at her, when I was really looking at the planes. I actually think she may have liked it, but again, she didn't realize that I was looking right past her at the planes (driving by that airport is the only place where I'm an unsafe driver.)
