Has AWA Downgraded Service To Other Airports?

Thu Nov 08, 2001 8:16 am

When I was Burbank Califorinia last week I noticed one day there was all day B733 service and then the next it was one A319 in the morning and the rest of the day it was Mesa CRJ's. It's obvious that due to the slow down in air travel and that America West couldn't really hang with Southwest on that route(purely observation and speculation, not solid fact.). Have they done this to other airports that they served? and what's the point of having one flight a day served by a B733 or A319 and then have CRJ's the rest of the day on the route as an airline that has nothing but B737 service.
Have a nice day! Smile/happy/getting dizzy

AWA has been downgrading service since before 9/11. They closed down the MDW and CLE stations and replaced 757 flights at ORD with A320's. I guess the point of using CRJ's on the BUR route is to lower their costs. Why fly a 1/4 full 733 when you can fly a full CRJ? Yeah they go head to head with SWA that's flying all 737's but the CRJ's are probably a better option for AWA right now.

LGB also has CRJ service now, but according to our res system some mainline flights come back early next year. SAN has received no CRJ's but we have lost 4 flights. And in December we go down to 2 R.O.N.S.

Cactus A319 did HP close CLE or just lay off employees and contract it, because as of yesterday 11/6 HP 534 still went from SAN-PHX-CLE.

They replaced their daily PHX-YYZ A319/320 with 3x daily Columbus-YYZ CRJ/ERJ.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

They stopped the PHX-BDL flight, which was full but terrible yields.

AWA22:

You're right, they contracted it. I was told they pulled out altogether.

I think AWA should increase its southern presence. Post-poning RDU instead of eliminating is a good idea. I think PHX-RDU starts Feb 1st. Has anyone considered PHX-MEM, Northwest only provides one non-stop there per day. As of Dec. 15th AWA will op 4 mainline flights and 1 crj into BUR. Also LGB will get 2 airbuses and 2 crj flights. BOI will have 1 crj and 1 airbus flight as of the 15th also. Loadfactor is looking decent...has been usually between 68-72%

Segment King you're hilarious. Ever consider going on tour?

Things aren't looking too good for HP right now. They're probablity of liquidation stands at 90%. They're break-even load factor for Q4 is 88% and they're at 70% right now. And they have WN knocking at the door in PHX and LAS. I'm not sure how long this airline will last.

Trvlr: an R.O.N is an aircraft that Remains Over Night at an airport.

HP isnt in a very stable situation right now, but just becuase of low pax loads, doesnt mean that the airline isnt making money.

On 01nov, they downgraded our 3 airbuses to 733's, so now were actually getting higher(!!) yields out of ONT. Also, Cargo has been busy over the past few weeks just pumping out shipment after shipment. And, even at our lowest priority, almost half of every dollar taken by cargo is profit for the airline. And with that, we have loaded up 732's and 733's, and still turn a profit on that aircraft with as little as 1/4 load!

Also, mail comes into play, And cheap fuel. Fuel right now is running at around .30-.40 cents a gallon (bulk rate  Smile ).

This is part of the reason the UA is slowly inching down the rail in reverse - they have the strictest rules set in place for shippers, and with that, no one wants to ship on them. Would you want to ship on something that is super restrictive? NO. This is why shippers are turning to AWA and other airlines.
