747 Flies Mach .90?

Thu Nov 08, 2001 12:10 pm

In refernce to the post "sonic cruiser update," the link mentions on article about it at:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/45314_sonic05.shtml
It mentions that the 747 can cruise at mach.85 and sometimes .90. Is that true? I thought the Trijets generally were faster. 727, dc-10, Md-11?

Just wondering. THanks.

Yes it's probably true. If the flight has burned some fuel, and has a light load, and cruising at a pretty high altitude, yes. I've seen pics in the database of them going M. 0.86, more than the 0.85.

The B747-400 can go up to roughly Mach 0.92. Normal cruise for a B747-2/3/400 is around M 0.85, and for an SP M0.86.

The economic cruising speed for 747-300/400/sp are higher than 747-200. The SUD enable 747 to cruise economically at .85 instead of .84 in 742.

Can anyone comment on whether or not a 747 flying at Mach .90 burns more fuel per seat per mile than is projected for the SC?
