AC 744s Combi: Specific Requirements?

Fri Nov 09, 2001 1:42 am

Hello,

Has anyone ever heard of specific safety requirements imposed in the early 1990s by the Canadian governments to Air Canada for its 747-400s Combi please?

Are these aircraft still Combis or have been converted to full-pax?

On what routes do they use them please?

I don't know about safety and I'm not sure about routes (maybe YYZ-FRA, YYZ-LHR??), but I know that they are still combis (or at least they were last year.) They may not be around much longer though. I forget the ownership details but Yyz717 will know.

J'éspère que je t'ai aidé un p'tit peu...
Next flight.... who knows.

All the original AC combis are still combis. I think they might have parked one, but I'm not sure. The ones they got from CP are full passenger. Most of the time the combis are used on trans-atlantic routes. Occasionally they would be used trans-pacific or even to tourist hot spots in the busy season.

When AC ordered their 744s in the early 90s, Transport Canada imposed a restriction: in the event of a massive troup movement operation, AC would be required to use their 744s to supplement DND's transports. Beacause of this, extra 'beefing up' of the landing gear and associated structures was required. Obviously, this added extra weight; in fact, this added weight severley restricted certain loads on longer flights. When AC parked their 744s in the desert upon delivery and desperately tried to sell them, there found there were no interested parties because on many flights, the extra weight made in uneconomical. AC reluctantly brought them into service, but have always had that weight restriction.

It sounds farfetched, but I assure you, I've heard this from many reliable sources. I may have some facts wrong, mind you.

I am unsure if ex CP machines have this mandated extra feature...

According to JP Airline fleets, the AC 744 Combi's have the same max weight as the 4 ex-CP 744s. So the 3 AC Combis were not certified at a higher gross weight so perhaps the heavier weight of the mods simply means a reduced payload.

Of the 3 combis, 2 are leased from GE Capital. The 3rd appears to be owned. Of the 4 ex-CP 744's, one is in temp storage ("Max Ward") and will be returned to the lessor in Feb 02.

The 3 Combis are used on the following routes: YYZ-LHR/FRA/YVR and YVR-HKG.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Yyz717 is right. I don't believe the gear mods increased the MTOW, they simply reduced the payload.

Back in the day, the 744 was also used on YVR-SEL & return. It seems they now use the 76 to the new ICN.

I thought that C-FGHZ was the one is storage and it was going back? I hope not this is the new one and it should be the last to go.

I have noticed that Air Canada has taken one 747-400 off line on there web site and now it says that they operate three where as they use to have four.
