Best Coach To Tokyo

Sun Nov 11, 2001 11:51 am

I'm flying SEA/TYO in December, and my company will only pay for coach fare. My choices are United, American, or Northwest, can anyone answer a few questions?

1) American's web site seems to indicate their international 777 coach is being updated to include powerports, personal TV's as well as 35" seat pitch. Can anyone verify if their Seattle/Tokyo flight has been updated? If I take this flight I have to leave on Tuesday, for some reason they don't have monday flights...

2) I might be able to swing a United full economy ticket on their 777 flight, and get into economy plus. Besides the 35" seat pitch, is there any other benefits like PTVs or power ports?

3) I have some domestic first class upgrade coupons on Northwest, is there any way to convince NW to accept them for international business class upgrades?

Any other thoughts, recommendations would be greatly appreciated...

thanks in advance,

Take American if your flying coach. All thier 777s have been upgraded with More Room Throughout Coach (and trust me, it is no gimmick, there is a hell of a lot more legroom), plus PTVs and modern 777s. UA also uses modern 777s, but with less legroom. NWA is probably the cheapest way to go, but also has the oldest plane (742s, I think). Keep in mind that AA's SEA-NRT service is ending in January, if you are returning in January. Also, SEA-NRT loads are very bad, so a good chance you will get a row to yourself. I've heard the plane is going out with only 50-60 people.

United also have PTV, and 777 economy plus seating gives you 36pinch!

Fly United forever!  Big thumbs up

If you want to be ontime and have your luggage arrive with you fly NW. The 747-200s are older, but all have had new interiors within the past couple of years. NW will probably be cheapeast and the service will be the same.

United wins, looks like our travel agent found some upgrade coupons to get us into business class (from a full coach ticket).

Unfortunately I won't get any mileage credit for Alaska like I could on NW/AA, but Business Class should be great (first time for me). I feel bad for AA though, I offered it as an option but my trip companion vetoed it immediately after the AirBus crash Sad

AlaskaMVP: You are going to have an excellent flight. I've flown UA Biz class to Tokyo before, and it's great. In the future, though for coach travel, I'd really recommend taking American across the Pacific. The legroom is greater than any other airline (at least in regular coach), and for some reason I have found AA's Asian flights to have the best service in their system. However, as AA will stop flying the SEA-NRT route soon, you probably won't get the chance.

Have a great trip!
