Garuda Indonesia 737?

Mon Nov 12, 2001 9:42 pm

Is Garuda Indonesia still thinking about the order for B737NG to fullfil their regional requirements or have they shifted away towards smaller equipment? And what about their widebody requirements?

I was not aware that GA is thinking of NG737s...their order for 737 300s were cancelled and these have been taken up by ANZ. Their wide body order is for the 777, but not for a while now. They now operate A330 300s, 747 200s and 400s and DC 10s. Their leased MD11s have been returned to lessors.

Last words about this from people in Garuda...

1. 777-200 orders have been deferred, penalty fee imposed by Boeing is replaced by a deal where Boeing brokers the lease for up to 8 second hand 737-400s.

2. There's a shortage of 737-400, some 737-300 routes have been replaced by 737-400s (primarily CGK-SUB and CGK-SIN). The 737-500s still flies to airports with short runways (SRG, PNK)

3. Widebody requirement? 5 DC-10s need replacement, 777-200s are slated to replace them, however, as the DC-10s only fly CGK-UJP-MDC and CGK-ICN or a regular basis, the older DC-10s can be retired before the 777 arrives. The once-a-day CGK-UJP-MDC service will be replaced with more frequent 737-400 service. Perhaps some of the spare 737-300s will do CGK-MDC direct.

4. GA is short of widebodies to re-open their routes. New routes that have been opened this year are CGK-SYD, CGK-ICN and CGK-FUK. The 777s will reopen the European routes such as CGK-CDG and CGK-ZRH.

5. GA policy regarding their 747-200s is unclear after the DC-10's retirement. I guess we'll have to wait and see!

In recent times it was rumoured that GA would convert the B777 orders into B737NG orders and take additional A333 and possibly some A340. Any truth in this?

AFAIK, GA already put the "down payment" for the 777, loosing that would not make the govt. happy. The A333 is excellent for GA, pax and crew like it, but it lacks the range of the 777 which GA needs for thinner Europe routes. I don;t know where else the A333 could be used for. The only other routes I can think of is HKG and destinations in Saudi Arabia which is currently served by the 742s.

It has been rumoured that if the 777s do come, NRT will be served by 777 and HKG will have A333 repacing the 742.

I was in Indonesia about a year ago and flew a Garuda DC-10 from Jakarta to Denpensar, Bali. The aircraft was full. Seems like that would be a good route to put a 330 or 777 widebody on. Also flew from Padang to Jakarta in a 737...don't know if it was a 300 or 400....but on both flights the service was great, aircraft were clean, the flights very pleasant....and best of all, my surfboards arrived without a scratch!!
