AirTran At Hartford?

I know I have posted this message before. But does anyone think that with AirTrans recent move into the BWI market, if they will begin serving BDL from there. I think it would make sense, if they jump on this market trying to take in Metrojet's old passengers.

I suppose anything is possible in the new low-fare marketplace on the East Coast, but it would be hard to compete with WN's eight or so flights a day.

With Metrojet going and DL Express scaling down everywhere, it would be a great market for Air Tran to return to.

AirTran's recent moves have suggested to several at this forum that they are trying to position themselves for a potential US Airways demise. Focus city operations in PHL, PIT, and (where not in competition with WN) BWI, are well-positioned to take advantage of US's financial bleeding. AirTran is also looking at medium-size markets in the Northeast where US is dominant; right now they are in close negotiations with both Rochester and Syracuse.

Hartford is a very logical choice for AirTran as well. Atlanta is a major business market that's costly for travelers from non-AirTran cities. AirTran also serves a number of connecting cities that Southwest doesn't--Dallas, Fr. Myers, and Memphis, to name a few. And with the loss of MJ and DL Express scaling down as you note, the Florida market from BDL would surely bear more low-fare capacity.

If AirTran's management feels that the airline's debt load can take it, they are well-positioned to expand substantially in US territory. BDL, PVD, ROC, SYR, ALB, SDF, RIC, CMH, IND are all possible markets.

Need a new airline paint scheme? Better call Saul! (Bass that is)

While I would love to see Airtran in BDL, I think it might be a while. Remember, Airtran used to serve BDL up until about 2 years ago....then they pulled out of the market. Apparently, BDL loads were a little weak and plus DL wasn't playing so nice.

Things have changed now of course but I still think Airtran might hold out on this market at least for now.

Also one note, DL Express is not being scaled down as much as originally announced. Currently, DLX is running at about half the schedule pre 9-11 but as of the Dec. 1 schedule, they will add 15% of DLX capacity back. Loads on DLX have been running very high...no doubt in part because of the demise of MJ.

Didn't they also serve SWF around the same time. I seem to remember them doing so.

I could see Air Tran come into BDL as long as SW doesnt add more service to BWI. With the current 8 daily non stops to BWI, UA also offers 4X daily CRJ + 737 service into IAD and US offers 3x daily mainline service into National. That comes out to about 13 daily flights into the Washington area because the 3 CRJ flights figure out to be about 1 mainline. O & D 4 quarter daily pax into BWI is 1202 and Washington airports is 512 so that comes out to be 1714 daily O & D into Baltimore-Washington area. Figure with conecting traffic on UA and SW, the washington market could easily support a good 2-3 extra daily flights on SW to BWI, if they dont I could see Air Tran move in and fill the void once passenger travel gets back to normal levels pre 9-11.
