The music I heard on airplanes, of course.

Currently, the song "Why" is always in my head when I think of flying, as that song was played as my last BA 744 rolled onto the rwy in YVR in the evening. I thought it was a completely surreal experience, speeding down the runway to the sound of that ethereal singing, seeing nothing but a few lights shooting past and being totally absorbed into the harmonic singing and the acceleration, so much in conflict with each other....

"In the summertime" used to be similar, as I heard that about 10 times on another flight three or four years ago. "Leaving on a jet plane", too.

On a flight from Riyadh to NYC onboard Saudia, i was in buisness class, in which they had the cd, "Sting-Brand New Day"--as part of their inflight entertainment--so now whenever i hear the song Desert Rose or any song from that cd--looking out of a Saudia Boeing 747-400 at 33000 feet comes to mind--a view similar to this......

Remember when United's theme song was Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue? Every time I hear that song it reminds me of flying when I was a kid.

Music that makes me think about flying:
A lot of good classical music does; I've been known to cue up "Ride of the Valkries" on take off  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
Nothing beats doing some light acro to Joel Satriani's "Crystal Planet"

Favorite flying tunes:

Tom Pettey is good too along with just about anything by Buffett esp. "Come Monday", "A Pirate Looks at 40", "When the Coast is Clear", and "Beach House on the Moon"

Pink Floyd "Learning to Fly"
Steve Miller Band "Fly Like an Eagle" or "Jet Airliner"
Steven Stills "Treetop Flier"
Stan Rogers "White Squall"

Its hard to beat a good country/western station over the ADF in the middle of the night, hard to beat some Willie Nelson, or Highwaymen as you're droning along late at night.

Happy contrails - I support B747Skipper and Jetguy

All genres remind me, basically any music video that featured a plane in it does it for me.

I think of the song "Sing" by Travis because I remember listening to it and kinda liking it when I was flying from ZRH-BOS. There was a gorgeous girl sitting near me too and I kept staring at her! LOL

It was Swissair, too  Sad

Airlines which have used commercial music in their past commercials.... and when I hear the original music these days I think...hey, isn't that xxxxx airlines' theme song?

Cathay Pacific used Barry White's Love's Theme...(70's)

British Airways used Delibe's Lakme Opera... one excerpt of it which has been played to death..(90's)

Qantas Airways used Burt Bacharach's Reach Out for Me..(70's)

I would have to say Tom Petty's "Learning to fly". I actually heard it over the ADF while I was taking my flying lessons. It just sort of made me chuckle.

I also have to put in a vote for "Paradise City" by Guns-N-Roses. During an 8th grade, school sponsored trip to Washington D.C., I was listening to a cassette of this while on takeoff aboard a United flight from Chicago. The song started just as the pilot released the brakes. Pretty cool.

A good deal of Pink Floyd’s music deals with flying. Several of the guy were/are into aviation. I’m not sure if they were always speaking of flight in the aviation sense or not, but they mentioned it a lot.

“I’ve got wild staring eyes
And I’ve got a strong urge to fly
But I got nowhere to fly to”

Nobody Home, from “The Wall” by Pink Floyd

When I was flying overnight with Air Canada en route to Rome from Toronto on a 767. I was looking outside the window to see the navigation lights on the tail while listning to Enya-Only Time.

When I was comming from California in 1998 I flew:

FAT/LAX - Skywest EMB. 120 N216SW
LAX/JFK - UNITED 767-200 N601UA "Red eye flight"

And the song I still remember vivid was CHICAGO "All roads lead to you" specially the part that says:

"Headed east on a Jumbo Jet"

3 songs come to mind.

"Praise you" by Fatboy Slim. ( I was listening to it just before departing, and it got stuck in my head during the flight.)

"Children" by Robert Miles. (Listened to it onboard the plane as we were desending into the sunset. One of my best flights ever)

And finally:

"We're flying high" by U96 (I think) A very nice coinsidense to hear it on the plane just before takeoff.  Smile

Each time I boarded a MAS 744 (4 times all in all ) u could always hear Richard Marx´s "right here waiting..." - instrumental version.

When I returned home from NY back in 1995 (DL763) "Batman forever" was shown on IFE and the final track"Hold me ,thrill me ,kiss me ...." by U2 always reminds me of that Journey.

Though their songs are more earth bound, I like to listen to Kraftwerk when travelling. Also, Robert Miles' Children is great...
However! I must say that listenign to good ol' 60' & 70's music reminds me of looking out of the window of a Korean Air B744 cruising over the Sea of Snow known to humans as Northern Russia... The sunset was absolutely amazing!

Ever since I flew Futura, Celine Dion's music makes me think of flying.
For night flights, REM's Nightswimming, which was played on my Monarch flight LPA-EDI in the summer.
Also perhaps George Michael songs and Elton John songs.

None of which, apart from REM, is what Id normally listen to though  Insane

You Gotta Love Cathay's Barry White theme from the 70s... It still reminds me of the CX lettuce sandwich c/s and their FA's everytime I listen to it...

Another one is the "ryde of the valkyries"... one occassion, I played it on CD and then a dozen hueys flew over my house from the local airbase... AWESOME!

Leaving on a Jet Plane reminds me of waking up at some unGodly hour to make my 3hr train/bus journey from Eastbourne to LHR to catch the early morning Asia flights... a few years later, I came back to Europe after a few years absence, only to listen to the song over Serbia...

Dave Grusin's Mountain Dance, played on a cafe at VIE in the middle of winter while planes were T/Os and Landing. The memory stuck with me ever since...

Finally, "come fly with me"... no, it doesn't remind me of Easyjet, but my mum used to sing that when I ask her about her days as a Garuda FA.

Rachmanninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto- C Minor. This was what I listened to on my first transatlantic flight. It was a NW DC-10-40 DTW-CDG. This song always makes me think of that flight, and reaching the coast of France just as the sun was starting to peek over the horizon thinking......"wow, I just crossed the entire Atlantic Ocean."

Stereo by the Watchmen. Because you hear the song and it just keeps building up to something. Then all of the sudden the music gets louder and it starts going a lot faster. It reminds me of taxiing to the runway and taking off.

Québecair, Trans World, Northern......

Fri Nov 16, 2001 9:15 am

This may be totally unfamiliar to all non-french speaking participants on this forum, but I'm going to mention it anyway... just in case peoples from France and Québec are reading this.

In the late 60's, a young Québec singer called Robert Charlebois was singing a song called "Lindbergh". In that song, the name of many airlines were mentionned. The original lyrics in French were:
"Et puis j'suis parti sur Québecair, Trans World, Northern, Eastern, Western, pi Pan American"
In English it would look like this:
"And then, I left on Québecair, Trans World, Northern, Eastern, Western, and Pan American".

It is interesting to notice that when Charlebois sings this song today, he is making the correction regarding Northern. Now he is saying Northeast... who was flying to Montréal Dorval (YUL) in the late 60's.

And as for Québecair, well, I liked them very much.

The songs that remind me of flying would be Pink Floyd "Learning to Fly", Grateful Dead "Bertha" because I always listen to that song on my discman whenever I fly, and anything from The Beach Boys because I always fly Continental and they always play The Beach Boys before push-back. At least that is what they play on the 757's and the 737's.

"Up, up and away, on my beautiful balloon..."

which on TV commercials in the '60's was..

"Up, up and away, with TWA.."

and from the movie "Officer and a Gentleman"

"Love lifts us up where we belong..."

"We lift you up where you belong, where the proud birds fly, Continental skies..."

and of course...

Rhapsody in Blue (United's theme music)

Nothing like listening to Donald Fagen's I.G.Y while in the concourses between flights. Also Deacon Blue is good too.

Can't forget Phil Collin's TAKE ME HOME...........had many of of smooth landings listening to that one.

Chris Rea's TEXAS.........nothing like flying above the clouds and seeing a Texas sunset or sunrise to that one.

Alfred Newman's Airport theme along with the theme from Airport 1975 by John Cacavas get me in the flying mood.

Jerry Goldsmith's The Blue Max and Night Crossing also have fantastic flying stuff.

I guess I'm showing my love of film scores...  Smile
