PIA's New Route - New York>Istanbul>Karachi

Wed Nov 14, 2001 7:27 am

PK 718 is now operated as New York - Istanbul - Karachi according to the PIA website. The route is being used with the 747-300.

What was wrong with the Manchester route, that it made them switch over to Istanbul.

 Big thumbs up

Regards

You serious? That would be IST's only scheduled 747 passenger service. They do get some cargo but passengers only as diversion. Cool... Is it daily? What time does it arrive and depart etc...

I believe that Thai Airways used their 747-400s on the bangkok-Istanbul routes. I wonder that if that route is still in service, perhaps not.

I may be totally wrong, but I believe this was a one-off to carry President Musharif from NYC to IST for his meeting yesterday.

Anyone got a definitive answer ????

I just checked OAG for this route for the entire week and there is no such flight.

I've just remembered that teletext showed the PK718 as cancelled on the Manchester arrivals page!

Anyone staying up tonight to see the A340-600 return? It's due at 2 am! Then again, we are forecast to have thick fog and so it'll be the first recorded diversion for this type due to weather!

Don't know who was on board but it's joined the illustrious club of rare and exotic aircraft that I've missed at MAN  Sad

I saw a Qantas 744 at IST in July. I didn't know QF flew IST. Do they have regualr scheduled service to IST, or was it just a charter or something like that?

QF operate a series of charters from LHR to various points in the northern hemisphere summer time rather than have one sat at LHR all day. Can't remember if the flights link up with cruises or not.

Shamu

Cut and pasted from one reliable source with no editing done:

"This is an exercise planned by Airbus Industrie OVER TWO MONTHS ago.

A 15 hour non-stop return flight From and To Manchester by the A340-600.

To test, prove and demonstrate what this new aircraft can do. And also as a 'Thank You' to the BAE employees at Chester who built the wings, some of whom are on board.

Manchester Airport is also taking the opportunity to size up the new aircraft with regards to airport terminal infrastructure, stands and taxiways etc."

Still dont know why, well I do, but QF should send up their 744 from LHR to MAN, or even NCL Big grin, to sit there instead of LHR.
 Big thumbs up
I am starting to feel proud of BA though, especially when I seen G-BOAE op the first LHR-JFK Concorde sched flight  Smile

QF used to fly the 747s to Manchester (QF1, MEL-SYD-SIN-BAH-LHR-MAN, then MEL-SYD-SIN-LHR-MAN with the 744), then the LHR-MAN was operated for a while by BA with a dedicated QF1 flight number, the only time a BA 737 has ever been operated from T4. Now I guess they just put pax bound for 'oop north' on the shuttle.

Thanks David ....... that would make sense, as I couldn't figure out any airlines @ MAN who'd be interested in it.

Cedar, I might be wrong, but from my days in ATC, I think the flight number was QF 009 and 010 for the MAN schedule. They were great guys, often asking for the "lowest level possible" to go down to LHR. Presumably for the view, they'd often do the route at FL70, only to have to then climb to something like FL130 to enter the hold at Bovingdon !!

It was the alliance with BA which scuppered the service. You're correct saying the MAN-LHR leg was later operated by a BA 737; it was also the only time BA had a regular rotation thru T2 @ MAN.

I have a funny feeling that we might end up with VS using them on the MCO run all year round when they take delivery as I believe it was parked at T2 for a while.

The PIA flight via Istanbul was a oneoff service as it was carrying the president and he wanted to stop over in Turkey for some official business, PIA axed Istanbul last year from their network, before being axed teh city was linked with Europe and the US using DC-10s and later 747s right upto 1994, the service then was downgraded to A310 and further to 737 with four stops enroute it was again upgraded to A310 and linked with Athens before finally being dropped.

The Qantas 744 at Istanbul was most probably one chartered to carry ex-Australian forces men to Turkey who had fought in some battle there, apparently the men are flown there every year Smile

Can anyone confirm if the rumour of PIA returning to BHX in December is true? The route is Islamabad-Frankfurt-Birmingham-Frankfurt-Islamabad using 747 equipment. Apparently, this info has come from an insider at BHX, but I'm suspicious.

Thats why the BHX route stopped for a while, the A310s didnt have the range to go around and fly non-stop to BHX. The flights with 747s are operating normally though, AFAIK.

PIA used to fly scheduled 747-200s to Istanbul linking it with New York upto the early 90's and Singapore Airlines flew the 747-300 there before the A340 Smile
