Was This Delta MD-88 Written Off?

Wed Nov 14, 2001 10:49 am

"The aircraft crashed on landing at La Guardia Airport during a thunderstorm. The aircraft descended below glidepath, and the landing gear was sheared off by a retaining wall at the beginning of the runway. Skidding down the runway, the aircraft turned 180° and came to rest on its belly."

Does anyone know if this plane was written off or if the pilot was fired?

Thanks,
Hank

Delta currently flies 120 MD88 aircraft, with fleet numbers and registrations in sequence - no missing numbers for a written off aircraft.

"Aviation Expert" Bryant Gumbel was on that plane when it happened.

I don't think that the pilot was fired. The cause of the crash was blamed partially on the Captains reading glasses.

The aircraft is N914DL. You can read the report about it at:

http://www.airdisaster.com/cgi_bin/view_details.cgi?date=10191996&airline=Delta+Air+Lines

The incident occured in 1996 and there are photos of the aircraft in service afterwards:

To clarify my pithy remark, Bryant Gumbel was anchoring monday when AA587 went down. He apparently said "The plane was a Boeing 767 jet, commonly known as an 'Airbus'"

I see N914DL(along with every other Mad Dog)in ATL all the time. N927DA is also flying. If you remember it was the one in Pensacola that shredded the fan blade on its takeoff roll.
