AA A300 That Crashed Was In Serious Incident In 94

Thu Nov 15, 2001 8:01 am

Remember the AA A300 had a major upset over the Atlantic (en route from the US to the Caribbean) in severe turbulence in 1994? 47 injured? "Bermuda Triangle Strikes Again" headlines?

Same aircraft. Probably just coincidence, the aircraft would have been closely inspected and has had at least one D-check since, but it's an interesting addition to the mystery of what brought down AA587.

Cedarjet, I vaguely remember this incident. Did the A300 divert to Bermuda as a result?

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Think so. I remember the whole thing got press, even here in England, mostly because it was inside the (yawn) Bermuda Triangle. They had diagrams of the flightpath in the British press and everything. It has made it into air safety books and is kind of considered (along with that UA 747 over the Pacific) to be a landmark turbulence incident, one of the most severe ever among incidents that didn't involve the plane actually breaking up. When I read that the crashed A300 had been involved in a severe turbulence incident, I immediately knew what the article / thread referred to.
