Fri Nov 16, 2001 7:40 am

Is is against the rules to have a passenger in the cockpit during the flight? I am talking about in australia.

This is in regards to a pre Sept. 11 flight.

Thanks.

CASA, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority has banned all cockpit visits - so it should apply to all Australian airlines.

I probably shouldn't engage in the debate, but just remember that the US has had cockpit bans for years, and it didn't prevent the tragedies of Sep 11.

Cheers,

I remember in 1996 once, on a flight from Coolangatta to Melbourne, the flight was almost empty, and a flight attendant invited my brother and I to come and visit the cockpit which we did. This was a QANTAS flight, however, I do not know of the current policy in regards to cockpit visitation.

Skystar, is the ban NEW or OLD? In other words, I wanted to write to Qantas in order to acknowledge and thank the crew for the excellent flight and the jumpseat visit.

But I don't want to incriminate the crew for having us in the cockpit. So do I include that tiny tidbit in the letter??

Therefore I'm asking whether or not the ban on inflight cockpit visits is NEW or OLD.

According to an Ansett pilot, CASA introduced the ban in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.

Hope this helps.

Flight deck visits on Australian registered airliners, prior to Sept. 11th, were at pilot's discretion.
A blanket ban has been in place from that date.
