Vietnam Airlines isn't thinking of acquiring new aircraft soon, given the slowdown in regional air traffic, a company official told Dow Jones.

"Although we had Letters of Intention expressing our interest with Airbus and Boeing, we have not decided to acquire any new aircraft soon," said the official who declined to be named.

"Those letters were exchanged before the September 11 event, and now the situation is much changed," he noted, referring to the terrorist attacks on the US.

Asked if the airline will continue its plans to buy nine aircraft - five Airbus and four Boeing jets - as reported by the state media, the official said "Everyone knows that given this situation, with operating costs rising for the industry, any purchasing plans must be reconsidered.

Recently, we had to stop leasing two aircraft from abroad because the falling number of international passengers," he said
