Did JAL 744 Know What Happened Behind Them?

Tue Nov 20, 2001 7:57 pm

Did they receive word and continue on their merry way? Or did they only find out once they arrived at NRT?

It depends on who you mean by "They." The JL flight crew probably knew within a few minutes of the incident what had happened but there was no way they would relay this to their passengers with over 12-14 more hours flight duration onwards to NRT. I will also state that the crew did not just go about their "MERRY" way as you have proclaimed. The JL crew continued their flight to NRT as they should have and most probably kept the bad news for themselves. As I have stated before in these forums, I was at the old HKG airport in 1991 and took many photos of people climbing aboard the doomed Lauda 767 flying HKG-BKK-VIE in March 1991 and it wasn't until I reached my hotel room in ANC that I saw on CNN that the plane did not make it's destination. There was no mention of this flight during the 10.5 hour trip from HKG-ANC by the crew members of this flight. It's just standard protocol to say nothing than get your passengers into a frenzy or panic when there is nothing that can be done.

Notdownnlocked, Judging from the entry of the age group in your personal profile you must have been 3 to 5 years old back in 1991 - ?

In fact, I doubt if many found out about it even upon arrival at NRT! The wake turbulance theory only come up after a few days after the crash.

No way would they announce it over the PA. "We are now crossing the Canadian border, our route will take us up past blah blah, over the whatever sea and on down into Tokyo. And by the way, a plane full of innocent people just like you has plunged into a suburb of New York and exploded. Thank you."

Its probably a fair bet that the JAL flight crew knew within minutes of what had occurred, but I highly doubt that they gave the passengers the news.

I can almsot say for sure they new. Both planes were probaly on the departure frequency, and while the ATC was calling the downed planes, they woudl have had to be listening.
