What Is Emirates Doing That The Others Arent?

Tue Nov 20, 2001 10:15 pm

I really want to understand all the hype surrounding Emirates, the excitement when they start a new route, or buy new planes, to me theyre not any different to SQ and CX or any of the other leading airlines in the world isnt VS better in many ways? so why isnt there much excitement surrounding them Confused

With all the competition going on both here and in the real world between CX and SQ, we should forget all that, because in my opinion, Emirates is better than them both. In fact, they are the best airline I have ever flown on, both in business and economy.

They are safe, their aircraft new, service good, and reputation good. Cathay can be inconsistent when it comes to service, and I question SQ safety, although their service is excellent.

It is like CX flyboy mentioned.
Emirates is one of the leading carriers in the world their reputation is excellent. Actual there is a bit more about EK in this forum because instead of other carriers reducing capacity EK expands a lot.
There are a lot of people in this forum, and they are from all around the world. But everybody knows what EMIRATES.
And they have an outstanding position in the aviation industry. They were on of the first to order the A380 a milestone in Aviationhistory. They have enormous success without joining an alliance. CX as far as I know did not to.
It is a carrier where a lot of people dream to work for.
So is the interest on them here.

regards SQ

Actually Dubai will run out of oil by 2010 at the latest. Emirates has at least during its inception been bankrolled by Sheikh Makhtoum (sp), but its capitalization is good at this point, and given its track record can raise money in financial markets.

They have created an outstanding image based on inflight customer service, a young fleet. etc. Also, a willingness to service smaller secondary European & Mideast cities (which are often higher yielding due tyo a lack of competition). Combined with an excellent hub airport at Dubai. With all this they have been able to join the ranks of SQ, CX etc. Alot of it is marketing hype but it seems to work. Emirates is now the pre-eminent ME carrier. Wasn't long agao that they were an upstart.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

1) Emirates relies a lot on passengers connecting in
Dubai, where a considerable amount spend a few days, and obviously they have to pay for the hotel stay and they inject money into the UAE economy. This money finds it's way to the sheikh's wallet because a lot of the hotels that Emirates recommends are owned by him. He uses this money along with his money from the oil/trade business to expand the company.

2)Dubai is the "Hong Kong" of the Middle East, and even though it's a small city it's used as a "re-export" center to large economies that are not as open as Dubai ie: Iran, Iraq, etc. The media city's opening and lots of new multi-nationals making Dubai their regional headquarter has helped too. Also, sheikh Maktoum has been wise and he has opened up the country to foreign investment.

3)Emirates has a good brand image, even though when compared to numerous airlines they do not have as many amenities, luxurious comforts for J/F pax. Their advertising certainly helps.

Do you think that they're marketing effort may not be as successful as that of, say SQ or BA? I mean whenever you think of a good airline, immediately SQ or BA comes to mind. But not EK, or their subsidiary UL, which I hear has improved so much their service is comparable to that of EK. Do you think it's just a marketing effort from now on then?

Actually their marketing is paying off big time. Everyone in Europe has heard of Emirates, especially in England (they even sponsor soccer teams!) and wants to try the airline. Also, they offer some very good fares from europe-OZ/Asia, especially in F/C which also helps. They have an excellent image in Europe and I suspect when they launch flights to North America they'll start a big marketing campaign over there.

Maurice Flanagan does it with smoke and mirrors. Wait until the Maktoums yank their patronage subsidies and then I'd like to see what tricks he comes up with.

Wingman,

This is an airline that worked hard to be where they are now, with not a single penny from the government, and all you can say is they are sitting on oil?? Why is it so easy to accord everything good in the middle east to oil?

I think it is also that they choose to fly to smaller destinations that the majors ignore such as Birmingham, Casablanca, Perth, etc. Of course they also fly to the major destinations allowing a one connection service between a place like MEL and BHX instead of two. And who wouldn't support a longhaul airline who has taken the plunge and supported your local airport.

The Problem is that Singapore Airlines Group do not have lucky Sheikhs that are full of oil. We have the wonderul Dr CHEONG!

I can't blame EK though. If you have money, expose it. Look at their 25 odd A380s. How they are going to use them, who knows....

Grrrr

Actually there is some misconception about the "oil" issue. I'd like to take this oppurtunity to mention that Dubai is not infact sitting on an Ocean of oil nor is it dependant on oil for its livelehood. Abu Dhabi has all the oil and they make all the money out of it. DXB is like,as someone mentioned above, the Hong Kong of the Gulf. Its has been a very rapidly progressing place and its become a major trading hub. DXB also has a booming tourism industry and many business have set up their regional head quarters there.
EK has progressed simultaneously with DXB.Perhaps the fact that EK has come out of no where to be one of the "big" names in aviation does create a fair shair of charisma. SQ and CX would have been in the same situation i would think a couple of decades ago but now they are Big,Global and very well established and everyone has talked enough about them. Emirates is still in the relentless pursuit to expand and they do it well.....and people are fascinated by this and naturally there has been an air of charisma created around EK.
I wish them well.

Hani,

I don't know what you're talking about. First of all Emirates is OWNED by the government of Dubai so of course the government helps the company out, in fact the owner is Sheikh Ahmed! Second of all while Dubai doesn't have the amount of oil that Abu Dhabi has it still has some oil.

Emirates' profitability has always been questionable- although they always post profits, thanks to diverting funds from DNATA at the end of the financial year. And we all know they buy those "best airline" awards- it's in their annual marketing budget.

I think one thing Emirates is doing right, is by Hiring Multi-national crews from all around the globe, The best of the best!!
This gives them a flare and better competitive stance against the others, as they can put those selected Cabin Crews to the Coutires that they were recruited from, therefore the Flight Attendants can relate much better to the passengers as they come from the country, and know there ways and cultures!!
I personally would love to work for EK...As people have mentioned..Safety is great, Crews are great and Aircrafts, state of the art...one thing though...how is it to live in Dubai?? I heard crime is bad...any truth in this??

Cheers

To say that crime is bad in DXB is ridiculous. Its a very safe place compared to other cities around the world. Dubai is a great great city......i really like it. But i'd rather live in Bahrain.

I also find those "OIL" answers quite ignorant...other countries also have oil, some even much more...but not an airline as good as Emirates.
And indeed, awards cannot easily be bought, especially not in high amounts...

To all those who complain about the 'rich sheiks' sitting on their oil fields and 'throwing around their petrodollars': get independent from oil, then you don't have to buy it and then you need not complain...usually those who waste most oil and energy in general cry at the highest level.
Buy smaller cars, or cars that waste less gas, introduce solar, wind and water power, but don't complain at the wrong address...if you had the oil you wouldn't pass it around for free either...
And it's true, the importance of the oil has decreased rapidly over the past years in Dubai. Tourism and the finance sector are growing and they will secure a bright future for Dubai even when the 'petrodollars' are gone one day...what will some people then complain about?

One reason could be is that i hear they offer ridiculously low fares on some sectors routed via DXB. For eg:BOM-DXB-LHR. and many pax frm South Asia choose to save some cash by taking this option even though it may entail a wait of 3-4 hrs at DXB.
