Popped a tire on rollout!

Sat Dec 05, 1998 2:46 pm

Today was a very interesting day for me!
I was flying into Van Nuys the final leg of my trip.
On my roll out I popped a tire and stuggeled to make
the taxi way! Fortunatly the great people at Time Warner
where I was going, where paying attention and saw that
I needed help! I'm alright! I little shaken! then. It was
a good landing by the way! Old tire!! Has anyone ever
seen this happen to an airliner or any other plane?

One of my friends burst 2 mains on a landing. I have skided a plane on accident. As you proably now the outside weres first as it slids along in the cross wind. Did you have a croos wind as it might have been that. I am pleased you are OK. did you put a nwe tire on and fly home. Were you in any danger? Also a DC-8 Iran Air I think did not have the right psi on take of and caught fire then when the pilot retracted it spread the flames in the cabin. He bought it around and in to fianl and about 8 miles he went in and hit the ground hard. I hope that does not hapen going into SNA as you now where I live.

I don't think I have seen an aircraft blow a tire on landing, but I have seen aircraft land with missing wheels. I was over at the RC club one day and an Extra 300 did a snap roll and the right main wheel went flying into a field. I was the only one that noticed it. The pilot came in an landed normally and was very surprised when he saw a bunch of sparks comming from the aircraft and it skidding along the ground.

Have you guys heard about the UA 732 at ORD that lost a tire on takeoff that susequently bounced and rolled many hundreds of feet and eventually stoped on top of a Lexus (I think) which was crushed.

In 19 years of commercial flying, Ive seen many a tire blow. Most times the pilot never even realizes it unless its the nose gear tire or a catastrophic failure of one of the outboard boggies. In todays modern airliners like the MD11 you can monitor tire inflation pressures right from the multi function display.
Blowing a tire on a light aircraft is a different story all together. In that situation all you can do is PRAY!!
