2001 One Of The Best Years For Airline Safety Ever

Wed Nov 21, 2001 1:15 am

Despite the loss of the AA A300 and the latest crash in Russia, this is still one of the best years for aviation safety if you don't count those who perished on the 11th September (losses due to acts of war are rarely included in statistics anyway). Until the Russian Tu154 went down in Siberia, not a single airline passenger was killed anywhere in the world this year, making it the safest half year on record. The second half hasn't been so hot but the main thing that has made it so dodgy isn't the number of dead (again excluding the 6,000 who died on the 11-9-01) but the high profile nature of the airlines involved, AA, SAS et al.

An interesting point under the circumstances. Will Sep 11th be considered the worst air disaster on record given the causes of those events?

Um, I don't think you can discount the 9-11. A) It revealled a major flaw in safety. B) It was a criminal act, not an act of war.

I think the best thing we'll be able to say about 2001 is that its over.

Does the Tenerife accident (2 747s) add more people killed (pax in the plane) than the 4 Sep. 11 crashes?
I think the tenerife one was worse in those terms...

Not couning the ground casualties, the Tenerife accident had about twice as many casualties as the Four Sep 11 crashes.

I dont know about you but most people I know consider the events of 9-11 an act of war not a criminal act!

Whoever said the best thing about 2001 is that it will soon be over was telling the truth.

I consider the events of 11-9 an act of war. It has been responded to as though it were one, and indeed all the claims made by the perpetrators and their supporters are that the attacks were retribution for previous acts of war by the west.

Tenerife killed 583 according to my memory and books i had on air disasters by stanley stewart.

I think this year was a rotten year for aviation.. Perhaps safety may of been good.
the 9-11 disasters the airlines which went bankrupt liek Canada 3000  Sad Sabena, Balair (wont see thsoe anymore at calgary)
and it looks as if Swissair may go under that doe.

This really sucks bad for aviation.. well that is what I think..

9/11 was an act of war, but so what? Who cares of those deaths and hull losses are counted in the official statistics or not? Bottom line is four planes crashed that day; regularly scheduled passenger planes that people got on with every reason to think they'd get to their destination safely. You can't discount those crashes at all; they were caused by poor security measures, and like any other crash, that's an airline safety matter that needs to be fixed before the issue can be put to rest. And that won't even *start* to happen for a year, when the new aviation security law has been put to full effect.

All I know is we've had *five* major air disasters in this country this year. That's a pretty bad year, if you ask me, whatever the "official" statistics say. When was the last time we had five regularly scheduled passenger airliners crash in this country in a year?

Terrorism = criminal act. Whether it also = act of war is probably something that could be argued ad nauseum, but if you ask me, in the case of 9-11, it wasn't. It was simply a heinous mass murder.

Anyway, saying that the year was safe if you discount the 9-11 is like saying the 1940s were peaceful years, if you forget about World War Two...

Look, we were alive when Sep. 11 happened and it's going to be a black day for the next 200 years. We are going to tell our kids about it, and they are going to tell their kids about it. I don't think losing 4 a/c in one day, an aircraft in Italy, an aircraft in on it's way to Siberia, and some more. 2001 was one of the worst years for Aviation security.

Reread my last post, quite prevocative ('flame-bait'?) about 9-11, thanks to all for not rising to it. Yes it was terrorism, and yes the losses that day should be counted.

Act of war, my ass - if you call this act of mass murder an act of war, you give it a legitimacy it doesn´t deserve. So what is the difference between Lockerbie and September 11th? None. Is Lockerbie included in the 1988 (?) statistics? Yes. Are the 11 ground casualties included in the stats? Yes, everyone knows Lockerbie = 270 fatalities. Does that make 2001 the worst year in history in terms of fatalities? Yes of course. Does that make UA 175 the worst air crash ever in terms of fatalities? It sure does. Is 2001 still one of the best years ever in terms of number of accidents? Yes.

Can't help posting again, but I would like to hear the comments from who ever it is, that draw some lines on a paper, and then have the guts to call it statistics!!!
Who the hell needs it!? I sure as hell don't need it to understand that this year, when it comes to aviation, will not be forgotten. EVER!

What are you talking about? There were a number of fatal airliner crashes in the first half of 2001, the most prominent being the Caraibes Twin Otter and the Iranian Yak40.
