FAT Face Scanning System Challenged By A.C.L.U.

Wed Nov 21, 2001 12:09 pm

The ACLU has decided to challenge the use of a facial recognition system at the concourse security checkpoint at FAT (Fresno). The system is the first operational use at an airport in the world. Video images are used to compare against a database, alerting security and law enforcement to known suspects such as terrorists or other criminals being sought.

A.C.L.U. Need I say more? They make a bit too many sacrifices on the nation. That is, the well being of everybody.
I don't know, so this is my signature.

Those idiots! How is it any different than having a cop standing there with a pile of wanted posters in his hand? Would they protest that? (Maybe they would- you wouldn't want to hurt the feelings of wanted fugitives- they're people too!). These clowns haven't got the slightest idea of reality. I'd better stop now, this isn't doing my blood pressure any good..........

According to the letter they sent the airport,
http://www.aclu.org/news/2001/n112001a.html
the ACLU's concerns fall into several areas including:

1) It is an invasion of privacy

2) The database will not contain pictures of everyone who might be a threat or may not be 100% accurate, creating a false sense of security

3) The system could be expanded to include pictures of anyone sought by police, including those with "outstanding speeding tickets"

4) The technology is unreliable

They may be valid concerns, but can't the same points be said about the current security system. Even the use of pictures is the same concept as a police officer using his memory of suspect pictures and faces at the security checkpoint.

Just wait...number 3 (above, in FATFlyer's post) is the crux of the matter...the police will eventually scan for every known possible "criminal" be it speeding ticket holder, a dead-beat mom or dad, people who underpaid their taxes by $2.75, etc.

Airports will become criminal clearinghouses.

"Fine, they deserve to be caught"...well how often will the system be incorrect, innocent people will be held for "the Man's" own bureaucratic bumbling? It will happen to YOU!

IMHO, many people are sacrificing their own personal freedoms since 9-11 like they were signing a blank check to a televanglist. "Just make us safe...whaaaa" Fools.

Oh you know...(lol I sound like Becker) the ACLU makes me sick. They have nothing better to do than to nitpick at everything. When it comes to safety, I have no mercy for people's inconvenience. It was a slack security system that got us into this mess to begin with on Sept. 11. I wish the ACLU would watch the news every now and then and see what happened in New York, D.C, and PA. These are just the type of people who are more concerned about if the toilets flush in the aircraft rather than if the guy sitting next to them is a terrorist. Wake up people!

The ACLU plays a very necessary role in preserving America's freedom. They challenge everything, but that is only to test the limits of the constitution, and not to allow criminals to get away.

They will lose this fight, because this technology is only a tool to help apprehend criminals. There is no law against law enforcement standing at airports looking at peoples' faces. All the facial recognition system does is accomplish this faster.

If someone is falsely detained, it will be quickly cleared up once additional identification is made. It's no worse than security measures today.

I'm not surpriesd at this group one bit. They have taken a dive for the past 8 years. You can't expect too much from the same ACLU protecting the North American Man Boy Love association! I hope the Justice Department investigates these morons once and for all. It looks like the ACLU needs to be overhauled. Bill O' Reilly really gave it to on of their lawywers when they we're protecting NAMBLA. Bastards! May they rot in hell!
