Retirement Flight

Thu Nov 22, 2001 7:23 am

I was listening to my scanner today and Delta Air Lines flight 128(B767-300ER, DUB-ATL) checked in at FL350. I stayed on that frequency and when they were told to switch to Washington Center, the captain said, "133.97, and this is my last flight after 32 years, thanks to all you guys for everything you've done." This got me thinking, has anyone here been to a water cannon salute ceremony for a retiring captain? I saw a show on the discovery channel about the 777 and they also included an AA captain's last flight. It was pretty cool. If you've been to one, tell us about it.

I was aboard DL1949 which was retirement for the L1011 as well as Cpt. Schmoyer. A water cannon salute was done, but it seemed like most of the attention on board was directed toward the TriStar rather than our captain. However, he did get a poster signing ceremony at the gate in ATL.  Smile

I saw a water cannon salute from the middle food court of Terminal E last July. I think it was for the last Delta L-1011 flight for Dallas.

Haven't seen one for a retiring captain, but have seen a few when:
- an airline has started service at my local airport.
- a new a/c type has started service.
- and for visiting heads of state.
