747's Future?

Fri Jul 23, 1999 7:50 am

What does the future hold for the 747 and future variants? Will production end in the near future, will their be derivatives? Who look like good customers?

The future of the 747 is up to Boeing, and how it market the aircraft. Boeing is in a sticky situation,it has knowingly or unknowingly built a competitor, the 777,and has to decide whether to stick to the cash cow,747,or try to market junior,777, as its replacement. The 777 however has at least a couple of years to recoup the R & D before it will bring in profits like the 747. I sure this causing some sleepless nights for marketing and executives guys or women.

According to www.boeing.com the 747-400 will continue into the 21th century, but not the other models.

If Airbus comes with their A3XX boeing must have a big, long haul aircraft to compete with.

Has there been any news of the 747-500X and 747-600X lately? Supposedly it was reported that they would in fact be put into production in a few years by someone on the forum who had gone on the Boeing factory tour.

According to "Flap Internacional" - the most important South American commercial aviation magazine - the Boeing's projects for 745 and 746 were canceled.
But since this piece of news (dated from 1997 if I'm not wrong) nothing more was told about what would Boeing be thinking about its 747 sucessors.

p.s. by the way, the model planes shown looked very pretty! I'd consider more beautiful then the current B747-400. They (745/746) would be a landscape on the airports!

I don't think so. At least I hope not. But even with the imminent arrival of the A3XX there will always be a niche between the A3XX and the 777 and A340
