Instrument Readings For Pax: Is This New?

Fri Nov 23, 2001 1:15 pm

I mentioned the following in another post, but I'm curious if anyone has had this experience before, and if so, with which airline and on what kind of plane? ...

On Nov. 19th I rode on my first Continental 737-800/900, and I was impressed by the info. they provide the pax with on the TV screen. The display lasted for about 20 minutes after takeoff, and then came on again when it was almost landing time. The display consisted of ground speed in MPH, outside air temp., altitude, rate of assent (or descent) in ft. per min., wind speed, direction the plane was heading, even that we were going 0.793 Mach, etc. And, all of this was shown with graphics, as well as with a map that showed our intended route to our destination (BWI-IHA), and showed the plane moving along the course and everything. AND, I saw all of this from coach!

I haven't flown nearly as much as most of you, so maybe you've all known about this for some time. However, it semed to me as if this were something that not every airline uses. In any case, it was very cool!  Smile

CO and other airlines have done this for a very long time on heavies. Now, with TV's on narrowbodies, they are implementing it as well.

Is this it?

jetBlue has this feature for free on its PTVs and it is on almost all airlines that have PTVs or any other TVs.

I think CO uses it for their shorter 737NG routes. When I flew EWR-LAX on a 738, they had a movie and some shows, but when I flew EWR-CLE on the 738 they had all that info and a map on the screens.

I also know Jet Blue has mapquest with all that info as one of the channels on the PTV. But a watched pot never boils  Smile

I'm kind of new at all of this, so as I mentioned, this was the first I've ever heard of it. The biggest plane I've been on yet is a CO 757 (from IHA to BWI, which didn't have this feature), so I thought that maybe it was just something new for the 737-800/900. Anyway, it's interesting to know that other airlines are doing this also. I think it's a very facsinating extra!

Actually on CO, if I'm not mistaken, the map feature is turned on at the captain's discretion.

Yes, ILS, that's what I am referring to.  Smile

And Milldoh, after the first 20 minutes or so, they switched over to sit-coms also. But when those were over, and we were stuck in a holding pattern for 40 minutes because of fog in Houston, the info screen came back on. It was really neat to see our track going back and forth on the screen, and to see our plane turn and start heading back East!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

If you really get a kick out of stuff like that I suggest:

It is just like the screen of the airplane. On jetliners.net, click on flight tracking.  Big thumbs up
