New MIG-21

Sat Dec 05, 1998 4:45 pm

Hi,
Does anyone here know anything about the new MIG-21?
This is the upgrade programme for the aging mig-21 fleets of countries around the world, such as Finnland.
I think this new mig-21 is called the MIG-21-2000. It is basically a normal Mig-21 with updated avionics and weapons systems, I think. I think the updates are being done by IAI(Isreali Aircraft Industries).
I admit the MIG-21 is badly outdated, but it's a great looking plane. It's my favourite jet fighter of all time.
Do you think that this new MIG-21-2000 could hold up against an F-18, F-15A, Harrier or Mirage 2000?

Sorry to tell you this, but all of Finlands MiG-21s are long gone, replaced by F/A-18s. I think that the new MiG-21 could be a good match for a F-4 or Mirage III. F-4s are being sent through the same process by IAI. They will have service lifes extended to 2030.

I've heard of the new Mig-21,but I don't know everything on it .I do know it will have a much updated(and needed)cockpit, resembling closely that of an F-16 cockpit.New weapon systems too.a strenthened wing and a new engine are all I know. I'm not sure about the Mig vs.F-18,Harrier or mirage, but considering that the F-15 has no kill ratio to date(roughly 97 to 0)I dout it could wil agianst an F-15.

Hope my info helped,(even if it is'nt very much!)

Honestly??
I doubt it could hold a candle to the F/A18 or F15 Eagle.
Its airframe is just not designed to tangle with the likes of the highly maneuverable fighters of today.
My favorite Soviet design was the MIG25 Foxbatt.
While it had great speed, it could not maneuver at that high a speed and ran short of fuel very quickly.
It was designed for the purpose of intercepting the
"then" B70 strategic bomber the us was working on.
I have many books, spec sheets, performance data sheets etc etc etc on Soviet aircraft.
I was always very interested in Soviet Aircraft.
