Sabena Golden Dog Service

Sat Nov 24, 2001 5:43 am

I was talking with my aunt and uncle at Thanksgiving dinner yesterday and they mentioned that upon my uncle's discharge from the Army (in the early 1960's I think) they sent their two dog's back to the U.S. (from West Germany) on Sabena using what was apparently called the Golden Dog Service. My aunt thought it might have been a dog only flight as she delivered them to the plane, but went home on another. I was wondering if anyone knew about this service, when it was operated, for how long, on what a/c, etc. It sounds really interesting, but unfeasible today due to customs and cost restrictions. Thanks!

I will look into it. I'll let you know if I find something about it.

A dog only flight? Okay, anything was possible in the good old days when Sabena was still property of the State of Belgium, but... NO! I'm sure back in the early 60s not all aircraft were equipped to transport living animals (heated compartment, compression etc), that was the obvious reason your uncle was flying in another plane than their dogs did.

ps: But a dog only flight would be cool  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

By dog only, I guess I meant that it was a cargo flight, that had a lot of pets on it (specifically dogs), and maybe included a special compartment or something for them? Anybody have some more guesses? Thanks!
