The Most Graceful Takeoff...

Sat Nov 24, 2001 3:40 pm

Which aircraft do you think has the most graceful and majestic takeoff?

Personally I think it is the A340-300. ALthough slow off the mark, she literally floats off the runway at rotation.

What do you think?

Cheers,

GulfAir.

I have always loved seeing a 747 on takeoff. To me there is nothing more graceful.

The B747s. Especially those heavy ones... just look at their wings when they lift off...

Concorde has the most graceful takeoff when she rotates her nose so increadibly far off the rwy until it gets enough wind under its wings so that it can lift.

The most beautiful one was B744 with R-R engines took off from Kai Tak 13 runway.
You could hear the echo sound reflected by the mountains from both sides of flying path, if you stood at KT ferry pier near the end of the runway.

The best one for sure was me in a Cessna StationAir, my first flight. It was really smooth! That's what it felt like to be a real pilot in the left seat! The next smoothest was A340-300! Leaving for my 9 hour flight on Lufthansa A340-300 from ORD-MUC! Best takeoff and flight ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A340 absolutely. Having said that, it's not very graceful if you happen to have a pilot who follows the centreline at bumpy SIN as if the plane is on train tracks.

Flew D-AIFA on LH, and we had the overhead lockers dancing as we approached Vr. Never had such a bumpy plane - but what would you expect with the wheels bouncing over the runway lights perfectly.

There are times when pilots don't need to be that accurate.

Cheers,

Justin

full pay loaded B747's flights from NARITA
in Japan non stop to Europe. They must have REAL full range take off without exception and struggle against gravitation. What happens if one engine stops ?
About ATC, they have to contact two departure controls; NARITA and HANEDA because of insuffcient altitude gain.
On the contrary, B747-SR ( specially designed for Japanese domestic flights with short range, about 200 miles at shortest) often request intersection take off and full pitched rocket climb. more than 20 degrees at sight. ..also graceful.

The A340 when it's really heavy. Looks so cool when the wings are producing lift, and bends. JUMMY!!!
Majestic if you ask me.
When in doubt, flat out!

I think all aircraft are graceful during takeoff - when the plane first leaves the ground and is in its true element.

My favorite takeoff was when I rode in a Boeing PT-17 Stearman. That loud, leaky radial pulls the plane forward. Wind in your face. Shortly after that, the tail gently lifts up, allowing the air to gently lift the bird's wings. Wow!
The aeroplane has unveiled for us the true face of the earth. -Antoine de Saint-Exupery

I think the 777 on take off is sweet. it looks like it takes no effort to get off the ground.
Contact Winnipeg center now on 134.4, good day.

Although I am not a big fan of the A340, I have to agree with Gulfair on this one. When that bird lifts off, it just floats away beautifully. Almost like it is weightless.

The 747's takeoff looks very powerful and graceful, but I think the 777's takeoff is the smoothest and most graceful. It feels great when your inside too! You don't really know when you've left the runway right away, that's how smooth it is!

It's strange... my posts usually end conversation on a particular topic.

Is this because I sum it up well, or is it just coincidence?

The 747, always has been, always will be.

Watch it on a sunny evening, far in the distance along the runway as it gently lifts off, the huge wings elegantly arching, and looks like the nose is pointing higher than its actually ascending, before a big turn around the airport and off to its destination into the sunset.

beautiful.

Well, not to go against what everyone else has said BUT...

I like the DC-9s. The are really powerful for a small plane, and they climb very quickly and then those main gear doors drop and pull the wheels up... kinda neat to watch.

Having said that, I like the A330 with Pratts as someone else said. Smooth and quiet, but that's what graceful is, right?

I'd have to go for the 747 as the most graceful on takeoff - especially when it turns shortly after leaving the ground.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

Here at KCLE we don't see many heavies, so I would have to say:
1. Boeing 757-200
2. Boeing 737-800 or 737-900

For sheer AOA combined with grace:
1. DC-9
2. MD-8X
3. DH-8-100 (because you see the whole wing)

Overall:
I'm really surprised nobody has mentioned the L-1011. At least it was graceful on the inside!

I would say the DC-10. Maybe not the most graceful but definitly the most powerful.
