What Is This? (a Bit Of Fun)

Sat Nov 24, 2001 6:14 pm

Hi All,

On a recent photoshoot with Gary Watt, we photographed a Singapore Airlines B777-300 and there was a bird chasing it.

When I got the image up on screen, I was shocked to see what looks like something half bird / half beast chasing the plane.

Any ideas what you think it is. I have my thoughts, but I'd like to hear yours first.

I do believe that this is a fine sample of a Lesser-Spotted Crested Cockatoo of the Southern Patagonian Highlands, a species thought to have become extinct many millions of years ago.

I concur with Lymanm. It definitely looks like a Great Blue Heron.

New Airbus spy-plane? Made to look like a bird so it wouldn't be recognised?

I think I'd agree that it looks like a heron of some sort...probably at a weird angle, too...anybody have good image enhancing software?

Looks like a vulture to me - we had them in Africa all the time, which made for interesting flying!

I think it's a yellowed bellied sap sucker!!! But enough about Bin Laden!

The bird seems to be a great blue heron, but I'm not sure if the great blues are in that part of the world.

There should be a rule against Birds chasing planes...

It looks like a rabbit jumped up and attacked the bird and it's fighting to take control of the flight.

I don't know if they have any in the vicinity of Changi, but my first impression was that it is a bat.

tail with either a dog or a rabbit in its talons...

it is definitely a type of heron. herons are one of the only types of birds that bend their necks in such a fashion when they fly. also, their wing spands are expansive and they have extremely long legs (for a bird).

Guys,

Love all of the answers. Actually, when I look very closely what I think has happened here is that you have a bird chasing ( or flying ) in the same direction as the aircraft. What you ALSO have is a second bird directly below this bird turning and flying in a right to left direction. But the angle gives the effect of a flying "thing" with long legs, hanging arms and a lizard like neck.

That's my take on it anyway. But Gary Watt and I had a very good laugh over this one when we first saw it, so I'll always remember this photo. (And to think that when I took it, I was cursing those birds like crazy because they were getting in the way!!!

BTW most of the posts and private emails said heron.

its a Blue_Heron-400ER ... its still in test flights, so keep an eye open - it's coming to a city near you soon.

On second thought, keep your eyes covered, it wouldn't be a pretty sight if that bird got a chance to do some peckin' on ya!

Maybe it's a heron or a pelican (do those live in Singapore). Possibly a vulture too (do those live in Singapore). That's pretty funny though! I bet it got jolted around from turbulence from the plane!

its for sure a heron or egret of sorts, i'd bet my life on it, its legs are trailing behind, and its head is retracted creating the crooked neck appearance

Its A Duck!

Tue Nov 27, 2001 9:46 pm

Its a duck, (or a goose) flying in the opposite direction of the plane, the legs are behind to the right, and the head, is moving sharply upwards when the shot was taken, giving the impression that it has detached. If you look at the shape of the wings, a Canadian Proud wings scheme springs to mind. He's moving his head as if to say, "Yeah Ok wiseguy you got Spoilers, but can you land on water? Nope!"

The emergency exits are here, here and here, for all you 777 jockeys who wish to challenge the feathered dude.

Hope ive helped. Doubt it.
