CDG-Paris The Only Architectural Beauty In Europe?

Sat Nov 24, 2001 10:46 pm

Of the pictures of airports I have seen in Europe all seem to have the typical architectural design except for both the CDG terminals in Paris, any others Confused
.....up there with the best!

Stansted. A beautiful airport. Munich isn't too bad either, although Stansted wins easily in my list of favourite airports.

Hardly. Aerogare 1 is an ugly, unfunctional monstrosity and it's dirty too, although it was cool in the 70's and 80's when it was new. I also thought that while the architecture of the Aerogares 2 etc...was interesting and quite pretty, the interiors are nothing special. I flew out of 2C on Continental to Newark in May and found the space cramped, small, and poorly ventilated. Sad to say, but Newark's revamped C terminal seemed a lot more enjoyable than 2C at CDG. Otherwise, I think CDG is a fabulous facility with lots of space and great photo opportunities.

Go back there now and have a look at the brand new terminals made for the A380... You'll be surprised !
Except those CDG starts to be great from 2E only

As far as Terminal1 is concerned, I fully agree with Conty up there.

It looks more like the average British multi-storey car park you'd get in Wolverhampton or something-horrible, ugly concrete, similar to what is on offer at Seattle's Sea-Tac....

My vote goes to Helsinki's Vantaa; very airy, plenty of windows to let the light in (or what little you get in HEL winter), and being able to see my aircraft on-stand from the check-in desks is wicked!

Manchester isn't too bad either, but it tends to get crowded at rush-hour.

Cape Town is probably one of my favourites-sunny, warm weather (mostly), great scenery and lots of jumbo's parked right up at the terminal window (no airbridges either-yay).

Regards

I truly think CDG1 is one of the most original airport designs out there, although I agree it hasn't aged too well and can't cope with the crowds today's air traffic involves.
Another architectural gem I have a soft spot for is the TWA terminal at JFK designed by Saarinen. God knows what's gonna happen to it...

CDG 2 is cool, CDG 1 is ugly, nice is FRA's terminal 2, MUC's terminals, HAM terminal 4 is nice too, and DUS's re-opened terminal B. Terminal 3 in NCE looks nice also, and I aslo think STN is great.

I like Terminal C at EWR let's not forget Terminal 1 and the international and AA terminals @ JFK.

The most beautiful airport in the world is definitely Inchon airport in Seoul!

Terminal 2 at CDG is fabulous. I will be flying there this winter, and will be checking out the new 2F.

Munich is by far my favorite airport. I love the design of it and the open feeling you get when in the terminal.

Yes, ICN is beautiful and functional. I read that it is the world's largest terminal building. Everything is concentrated in one terminal, with moving walkways to get you from point A to point B, and lounges overlooking the tarmac. All of the shops, bars and restaurants accept Korean, Japanese and U.S. currency.
