6 Accidents In 3 Months

Sun Nov 25, 2001 3:01 pm

this is weird. not counting 9-11, there have been 6 airliner accidents since september

SAS @ Milan
TU-154 shot down (?)
IL-18
Learjet @ PIT
AA 587
and most recently the Crossair Avro.

Skihigh2002 although I agree with you that media often makes an elephant out of a mice, it's still not normal to have 5 (let's not count the Learjet) rather big fatal crashes within the last 3 months.

There is nothing unusual about the number of accidents the past 6 months. In fact there are have probably been less accidents the past 6 months then the same time period last year. Everything is much more hyped and jumped on by the media since 9/11. Therefore we are seeing the "It SEEMS we are having more accidents" effect when we really are not.

What about the thousands of general aviation accidents that occured in the past year, let's call the national enquirer up about that. Maybe all GA aircraft should be grounded. geez

According to a British Aviation expert there will be a crash every week in the next 10-20 years, grim prediction Sad

I think the SAS and AA ones would have been reported no matter what.

The Russian ones I'm more skeptical about, especially the IL18, that wouldn't have been reported at all before 11 September. I doubt the Learjet would have been counted either.

The Tu154 would have been reported as well, I mean, it was shot down after all. Crossair too, they´re basically a major country´s flag carrier by now. And about the IL18 and Enimex crashes - how much attention did those get? Two lines in the papers´ "misc." pages.

I wouldn´t count the Lear, btw, that´s general aviation, and they fall from the sky like flies  Big grin - it´s not an airliner in any case.

I still believe that's it's more than during the last years. You have to see that this are MAJOR events and not Learjets, Cessnas, Pipers, ... falling down.

You forgot the two L-410s in September.

Still, there is nothing terribly unusual going on.

So you see, it´s become continously less in the past ten years. Let´s hope the trend persists.
