TWA B767-200 Exit Doors

I've asked this question on the AOL message boards and got no response, so I'll give it a try here. In March of '97, I flew a TWA 767-200 from JFK to MAD. Although it was a series 200, it had 2 overwing exit doors, instead of the usual one. I was wondering if there was a reason for this. Anyone have an ideas? Let me stress that it definately was a 767-200, and not a series 300.

How do you know it was a 767-200? If it said on your ticket, or itinerary from the travel agency, than I wouldn't be surprised if it was a mistake on the part of the travel agency or airline. Please explain!

I know because it was short like a 767-200. I have been on several 767-300s and this was definately shorter. It had far fewer rows than a 767-300. Additionally, most of TWA's 767-300s have a second entry door (or at least they did in 1997) after the Trans World First cabin. This plane did not have this.

Some 767-200s do have 2 emergency exits on each side. For example, Britiania's 767-200s are like this. I believe this is because, as a charter airline, Britiania packs more people into their 767-200. To comply with the evacuation requirement, a second exit was added.

So it's interesting to find out the origin of the TWA 767-200 with 2 exits on each side. Maybe it's bought second hand from a charter airline.

I agree with JZ; it is most assuredly because the aircraft was built with a requirement for high-density seating, which necessitates an added emergency exit on each side of the cabin. Britannia's 767-204ERs come to mind immediately with this configuration. The aircraft is probably leased or acquired second-hand from Britannia or some other operator that operated the aircraft in a high-density-seating configuration. By the way, TWA operates 3 767-300s with the Delta-style two overwing exit configuration and 2 with the BA-style emergency exit doors aft of the wing, but I'm sure that the aircraft in question was indeed a 767-200 with 2 emerg exit doors. Makes sense.

The Britannia theory holds up! On this site, there is a picture of a TWA 767 which used to be operated by... Brittania Airways! It has two emergency exit dooes

I too was looking through TWA's fleet list, it looks that they have two 767-205's. PresRDC it appears that you might have been on either on of these aircraft. They were the one pictured above, and N-651TW which was ex-DQ-FJA, by the way N-651TW is a conventional 767, not an extended range model.

About the pic,
i thoguht only there 767-300s have been painted!

Nope, dude, most of the long-haul B-767 fleet has already been painted. I must say that it sure is an improvement!

well when i was stl a few mnths ago i saw 3 767s and none of them were painted yet. and yes i do like the new paint job.....sure did look good on the 747100S

I am a follower of TWA fleet and particularly repainting to the new livery.

I live in Australia, but get to STL twice a year and have friends at TWA.

Air NZ has similar 762's and they are via Britannia - it is confusing to see the two O/W exits on a short aircraft.

There are twelve 762's at TWA.

I can confirm that these 762's are in the new livery:
N601TW, N603TW, N604TW, N605TW, N650TW (5 total)
The remaining 7 are unpainted.

Four 762's have been sold: N607TW, N608TW, N609TW & N651TW (all old colour scheme). New owner will be GECAS and operator will be Airborne Express. Two will leave at the end Aug/Sept and two in Feb. New 763's are coming.

That leaves N602TW, N606TW & N610TW in the old livery. If you have seen any of these three in the new scheme, please update me!! There is speculation that a 5th aircraft may be sold. And logically one of these.

Only one 763 remained in old colours - N691LF (ship # 16103) - if you have seen it in new livery, tell me.

If there are any other TWA fleet fans out there, contact me.

TWA Has No Britannia 767s

TWA has no ex-Britannia B767s. It operates 767-231s which were factory delivered, and two B767-205(ER)s, which were originally delivered to Braathens. 04 is Britannia's Boeing customer desig. 05 belongs to BRaathens.
