What Airline Job Do You Want To Have?

Mon Nov 26, 2001 4:40 am

What airline job would you like to hold in the future? Whether you're 12 or 33 you can still answer this question. Gate agent, Pilot, President, CEO, Mechanic etc.

I would personally like to start my own airline and become president, so you can work for me someday if you want!!

What do you think????  Insane
Thanks and Gig Em!

As a CEO, you can still be a pilot  Smile

I saw a story once that Korean Air's VP-Cabin Service is still an active cabin crew member!

Pilot would be nice for hobby but not for occupation. Most of all I like the technology behind all aircraft, so aviation engineer would be nice (already have some experience). But at the moment I'm studying to become an engineer sitting in some very dusty office somewhere in a high corner of a hangar, or even worse, somewhere in a dull city (technical head office of a manufacturer).

I hope to come back someday as a ground engineer.

A Flight Attendant for America West or Northwest.

Or...

A gate agent.

If I would choose the aviation field, I owuld want to be a pilot for the Continental 757 and 777. Still I will probably choose the medical field over that even though I love aviation.

I would like to become a captian on a CRJ-700 or a captian on a EMB-135/145!!! Then after a few years of that, move up to a FO on a large jet with the major Airlines, and then from there Captian. But that takes an entire career. Right now, I would be content to be a captian on a EMB-135/145!!!

It is good to see so many 16-20 year olds interested in aviation. As much as I hate to see people so ignorant on certain airline issues make posts, at least there is a forum where everyone can learn. I hope everyone here attains their goals in aviation. I hope the airline industry survives the uncertain future for all of us currently working and those of us who aspire to work for the wonderful airlines in the U.S. and abroad.
I wish I could have had access to aviation professionals in a manner like this when I was in college and highschool. No other student in my small private highschool had an interest in aviation like I did and no counselor had information on colleges providing aviation related majors. I had to do my research myself. It all worked out in the end with a lot of luck. I picked a great college and made the right contacts that put me in the right seat of some nice corporate aircraft and that led me to the airlines. I picked COEX mainly due to it's location in IAH. I had no idea there was a flow-through to big Continental and I know little of the other hubs. I almost went to ASA and NW Airlink. They are good carriers but in 1998 there were not as attractive as COEX was and still is. The pay was terrible for the first year at COEX but the time to the left seat was only 13 months and there I was in the left seat of an EMB-120. 2years after that I was in the left seat of an ERJ-145/135 based in IAH.
Since then the pay at COEX has been raised and will be hopefully raised again on the next contract being worked on very slowly at the present time.
This forum provides this kind of information so some people getting ready for the airlines can find a good starting point (regional/national). I hope I can offer some advice to others as no one was there to offer me any.

I totally echo IAH....hell, we didn't even have computers when I was a kid...almost not even color tv's....just kidding. I had NO aviation advice and no one to ask questions of. I went to Riddle cause they had the nicest brochure....

It all worked out in the end but I left the profession for about a year and a half to become a Air Traffic Controller....long story but I got back into flying and it was the best move I ever made.

No offense to YWG....

President or CEO if I had to be in the industry. Personally, I don't want to be a professional in the airline industry unless I am an aviation analyst for a major company or network.

UAL Bagsmasher,
I hope United pulls through. The whold industry needs United to make it. That's just too many jobs lost and too many people out there to compete with for people trying to get into the industry from the outside. Not to mention those of us whose desire is to retire on something larger than an ERJ-145  Smile

DE727,
You didn't subscribe to the thursday night smoke signal publication that Kit Darby's Air Inc used to put on if you stared hard into the evening sunset?
Did time on the scope huh? It makes you even more well rounded in the cockpit, that's how you have to look at it. I've got a good friend who started with you guys in June. He's on the 727 panel. Good guy. He was in recruiting for pilots at COEX.

De727ups - No offense is taken. I have some friends that are pilots, and there's just no getting that out of their systems. The reason I said ATC is the best aviation career (for me) is because, afore mentioned friends, went to college, accumulated much debit, were very lucky to get jobs for small airlines that paid penuts, and spent a lot of years bouncing around. For me, I was paid to go to school, was paid well for on-job training, and am paid even better now that I have a license. I can now go and get my PPL and fly for fun, if I wanted to that is. It took me a year and a half to go from recruit to controller, I know it takes a lot longer than that for you pilots. Food for thought for some of you who are aviation lovers and are not conviced that being a pilot is the be all and end all.

I said it was a long story...

I was making 600 a month working six days a week flying the big ditch (Grand Canyon).

Decided to try something else and took the controller test. Did well enough to get an appointment to the academy in OKC but washed out of the program, along with about 80% of my class...no shit. Did well enough I was offered a job as an assistant controller at LAX approach.....before it was Socal. I did clearance delivery, the ATIS, and worked the flight data machine. Several of the controllers told me to get back into flying rather than make a career of the FAA. I got to see how the ATC system works and what a controllers job is like. If I couldn't fly...I would have stayed with ATC, but if you compare my job now with where I'd be if I stayed with the FAA....not even close....end of story.

I'd say CEO of my own airline, but these days I'm thinking, what do I do, what do I tell people, when one of my planes crashed? What terrible moments these must be.
